(View it online at www.PETATV.com ) Note: You can view this newest version of " Meet Your Meat " , which is narrated by Sir Alec Baldwin, at: www.MeetYourMeat.com. It's far better than the un-narrated version, and can be obtained for just $5 on DVD or VHS. If you have an older version, I strongly suggest dumping it for this version. (text follows) Baldwin urged lawmakers to stop the horrific abuse of animals on factory farms and in slaughterhouses. For more information about this event, go to http://www.meetyourmeat.com/ (Please also be sure to watch this new video and share it with others). The video shows explicit undercover footage of the way animals are treated on today’s factory farms. Please write a letter to the editor in support of Baldwin and his efforts to promote vegetarianism and to help those killed by the billions in the meat industry. Actor Alec Baldwin joined forces Tuesday with Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to release a new DVD titled " Meet Your Meat " on Capitol Hill. The DVD is a " heart-wrenching and shocking indictment of the treatment of animals by the farmed-animal industry " and slaughterhouses, according to a letter Baldwin circulated to Members. At least one GOP aide was unimpressed with the actor, whose career has been sagging of late. " It's good to see that Alec Baldwin is on the Hill hawking his latest straight-to-video release, " said the staffer. " I'm sure it will be of the same quality as his other smash hits like 'The Shadow' and 'Outside Providence.' " ============================================================================= Additional Information about the news conference: ALEC BALDWIN CALLS ON CONGRESS TO PUSH USDA TO ENFORCE HUMANE SLAUGHTER ACT Actor to Screen Undercover Exposé Showing Rampant Animal Abuse For Immediate Release: May 19, 2003 Contact: Lisa Lange 757-622-7382 Washington — The Humane Slaughter Act (HSA), signed into law in 1958 by Dwight D. Eisenhower and strengthened in 1978 with the support of Bob Dole, is not being enforced—in spirit or letter—contends Alec Baldwin in a letter that will arrive in every congressional office today, inviting members to a discussion and video screening tomorrow. There, Baldwin will unveil a video that he narrated for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which documents shocking violations of the HSA. Baldwin will call on Congress to use its influence to compel the USDA to stop the daily litany of animal abuse that goes on in slaughterhouses and on factory farms. Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) will introduce Mr. Baldwin: Tuesday, May 20 Place: The U.S. Capitol, Room HC-5 Baldwin has mailed the video, entitled " Meet Your Meat, " to every member of Congress. " Everything in the is in clear violation of the bipartisan spirit of compassion that motivated passage of the HSA, " writes Baldwin in a letter to congressional representatives, which accompanied the videos. " I hope that after you review the footage, you will investigate the narrow interpretation of the HSA by the USDA and will do everything in your power … to protect animals from the array of abuses that are standard in the farmed-animal industry. " Among the cruel practices documented by Mr. Baldwin’s new video are the following: Pigs are confined to concrete-floored stalls and are castrated and have their tails cut off without anesthetics; chickens are jam-packed into wire cages in semi-darkness, their beaks sliced off with a hot blade to keep them from pecking each other to death under the stressful conditions; and calves raised for veal are chained in tiny, dark stalls, where their joints swell from standing on waste-covered, slatted floors or hard cement. In a speech given on the House floor in July 2001, Sen. Robert Byrd stated, " Our inhumane treatment of livestock is becoming widespread and more and more barbaric. … These creatures feel; they know pain. They suffer pain just as we humans suffer pain. " Just two weeks ago, at a May 8 Senate Appropriations Subcommittee hearing, Sen. Byrd grilled U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman in connection with the USDA’s lack of protection for farmed animals. In December 2001, PETA filed a petition with the USDA, calling on the agency to extend HSA protection to farmed animals from birth to death, not just during their final 30 seconds of life. Copies of Alec Baldwin’s letter and " Meet Your Meat " will be available at the meeting, as well as at MeetYourMeat.com. ---------------------- " Uneducated people believe what they are told...
