Stavropoulos, CEO Dow Chemical Company, 2030 Dow Ctr., Midland, MI 48642, USA Fax: 989-636-9656 E-Mail: wsstav <wsstav SAMPLE LETTER: *OPPOSE Dow's proposal to poison animals * Dear Mr. Stavropoulos: I have chosen to send the following letter because it accurately expresses my views regarding this issue. I am very dismayed to learn that as part of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) senseless and cruel high production volume (HPV) chemical-testing program, Dow Chemical Company plans to force-feed two chemicals (known as ADPODS), used for latex manufacturing and industrial cleaning, to 1,350 animals. It is my understanding that in its haste to follow the checklist of tests set forth by the EPA, Dow is proposing to test the two chemicals for reproductive and developmental hazards in animals, even though the results of 12 studies listed by Dow in its test plan show that these chemicals are not reproductive and developmental hazards in animals. Dow, in fact, states this several times: " In all instances, there were no adverse effects in any of these [reproductive] organs. Available data support the position that this category of substances has not elicited reproductive toxicity. " Even more incomprehensible is the fact that the two chemicals proposed for testing are not even part of the EPA's HPV chemical program. Given the amount of data already collected on this category of chemicals and the fact that the two chemicals to be tested are not on the list of HPV chemicals, Dow's reasoning is inexplicable. Nevertheless, the animals will suffer and die if these plans go forward. I strongly urge you to withdraw Dow's proposal to poison these animals. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to your reply. Sincerely,
