Guest guest
VEG LIFESTYLE REDUCES CHOLESTEROL (Yeah WE know) On July 22, NBC Nightly News (USA) carried a VERY positive story on vegetarianism. You can watch it on line at: http://tinyurl.com/hvfc The story tells us: " A low-fat vegetarian diet including soy, eggplant and almonds can reduce cholesterol levels about as much as widely used statin drugs, a small, one-month study suggests. " They mention a study published in the Wednesday, July 23 Journal of the American Medical Association, in which people were divided into groups who ate a vegetarian diet for one month, or a very low-fat diet, or the low-fat diet with 20 milligrams of lovastatin, sold as Mevacor. The vegetarian group showed an average drop of 28.6 percent in their LDL cholesterol, about equal to the 30.9 percent reduction seen in the low-fat diet plus statin group. By contrast, the low-fat diet-only group had just an 8 percent drop. The written article on the MSNBC website says the vegetarian diet included " eggplant, okra, soy protein, almonds, margarine containing plant sterols, barley and psyllium. " The NBC TV news report also mentioned soy milk, and tofu hot dogs and hamburgers. It showed a mainstream looking man about to enjoy a hot dog from a package of veggie dogs, telling us he didn't miss steak or McDonald's.
