Greetings,

In my nutritional studies, food combining includes info about meat

eating; also for those with a family history of diabetes or

hypoglycemia, they need to eat includes alittle protein with their

foods (meaning nuts and seeds). I will do some research on the

questions on B12.

Have a good day,

Marlene

Hey Laura - could it be quantities? If you use too much baking powder, that can

cause a pretty nasty flavour...

BTW, I've ordered from veganstore before and they do not specify a delivery

date or time. Depending on whether what you ordered is currently in stock, then

it can take some time before you get your delivery. I'm not sure what delivery

company it was sent through - Parcel Force? I think, in which case, if you are

out then you can pick it up from their depot, but I don't think it was the

Royal Mail, so no convenience of your local PO, I'm afraid...

Also, i've had a copy of Linda's 'taste of the middle east' for a little while

& there's some rather tasty recipes in there & it's easy to use with good clear

instructions. I haven't used any of her other books

:-)

Thanks Carole, I'm pretty sure that thats what it must be! I was very

generous with the baking powder because i was unaware that it had that

aftertaste. I also posted the cookie question on a cooking group i belong

to and got the same response. Although you were first in responding so

thanks :)

I had a look to check and it is parcelforce. Luckily i do live fairly near

to the depot so would be able to pick it up. Definitely worth a try. I

wish i could save them the time of delivering and just offer to pick it up

:)

Gonna try to get to the health food store tomorrow and whatever i can't get

there i'll try to get from the vegan store.

I've got her baking book (on Monday) but haven't used any of the recipes yet

as there seems to be a bias for dried fruit which i don't have in at the

moment.

I can't buy anymore books because i've spend too much money online of late

but its my birthday next month so maybe i'll strongly hint at it!

Thanks for your help,

Laura :)

There is a train station in Whitchurch I believe? I know the Valley

lines are known for being unreliable but I never had any problem with

the service when I briefly lived in the valleys and they aren't too

expensive (so long as it isn't a Rugby day). I don't know about the

bus service, when I lived in the city it was in Cathays (on the border

with Roath) and so I was always able to walk into the centre.

Beanfreaks used to be very good back then and used to sell various

vegan home made pies, but they stopped by the time I moved into

Cardiff. I haven't been back there for a few years so I don't know if

they've improved.

All of which is probably of no interest or help, but it was fun for me

reminiscing.

Yes, thats my local health food shop but it doesn't stock very much in the

way of vegan food. Having said that i haven't checked it since going vegan

so maybe i missed some stuff. I'll have to go and have another look.

When i mentioned Whitchurch i never thought anyone would answer so this is

kinda cool!

Thanks Peter :)

Yikes! Someone else who knows where i live! I live just behind the train

station at the end of the line " Coryton " .

I use the train to get into town if i'm not with my boyfriend (we live

together but he's out 3x week at American Football training). It is very

cheap and fairly reliable. I think the main trouble i have shopping in town

is with getting it back. I have arthritis, and have no strength. I can't

carry shopping bags out of the shop, let alone to the train station. This

has now been made worse by whiplash injuries. However, i was lucky enough

to drag my boyfriend shopping this weekend and got him to carry the bags to

the car! So my back was saved!

They didn't have any pies :( just the usual stuff, but i managed to get some

tempeh which i don't know what to do with!

I can understand that, even though Central station isn't too far from

Beanfreaks it is still a bit of a walk that has even got the better of

me at times.

The pies were nice too, I really wish they hadn't stopped. Still, it

is still a fairly good store compared to some places. I'm in

Kingston-upon-Hull now (though contemplating moving, including the

possibility of going back to Cardiff) and since my local health food

store closed we don't have anything near as good as Beanfreaks. For

some things we have to travel 50 miles to York or Leeds.

If it's the Tempeh slices I would fry it and use it like bacon in

sandwiches. I must admit I'm not really much of a fan of the blocks of

Tempeh, but I'm sure there a lot of people on here who will be sending

you plenty of recipe ideas now.

> It was freaky and fun for me too!

Well if you read the thread started by Saorise's email sent to the

wrong list you might think that way, but really there's nothing to

worry about. On a list this size there's a good chance of a few people

knowing a city the size of Cardiff, and it is such a lovely place too,

I really miss it.

Its blocks i think. I haven't opened the packets yet, but someone on

another group coincidentally posted a recipe for kebabs, or kabobs as they

call them so i might try that this weekend.

I guess i'm used to groups being mainly populated by Americans. This is my

first one which is for people in the UK. Makes it so much easier to ask

specific questions.

The simple answer is to buy veg and pulses and make up loads of stuff to freeze

- curries/pasta sauce/pasties etc. Beanfreaks in town does stock some vegan

produce i.e. vegan sausage rolls/pasties etc in their fridge section. however,

almost all the things they sell in my opinion are over priced. Far better to

take a day off to bake/cook and freeze. Nice to know there is a vegan in the

area ( I live up the valleys but commute to Cardiff daily ).

Thanks for the message Peter. I completely agree with you over the prices.

I am pretty good - IMHO ;) - at cooking and way prefer something i've made

from scratch than prepackaged food. When i visited beanfreaks the fridge

and freezer section had big gaps, which is probably a good thing. So i only

got a few burgers and sausages, the rest was all things like nutritional

yeast flakes, miso etc.

The problem i have with cooking in bulk is that my freezer is tiny and i

share it with my partner. At the moment its full of frozen veg, ice cubes

and frozen tofu. But having said that i should be moving soonish so we'll

have to buy a freezer then.

Luckily i really enjoy cooking so at the moment i don't mind too much

cooking fresh every night :)

I also like knowing that there is another vegan in the area! I know someone

from another group who also lives nearby and has just become vegan, like

myself. Think i'll email him about this group because i've found it to be

very useful.

Have a nice Sunday,

HI Cathe,

the old coconuts are the brown ones. The " green' coconuts that I've seen are

white, but usually someone has cut on it by the time I see it. Finding them are

tricky. Depends on where you are. Health food stores don't necessarily carry

them. In the Detroit area I saw them at a produce market, but in Ohio I haven't

found them yet.

Hello there, everyone. I answered these questions and then thought that I would

ask my own. Although a staunch vegan and animal lover, there is an issue that

I am grappling with that I would love to get other people's opinion on...

The topic is zoos. I would imagine that as a vegan I should be officially

opposed to animals kept in captivity. And I am, to a certain extent. However,

part of me also thinks that the one of the best ways for youngsters and people

in general to understand how beautiful and amazing these animals are is to see

them. I actually used to work in a small zoo when I was younger, and believe

that is where much of my appreciation came from...There is something completely

different about being able to see these amazing animals up close that just can't

be captured by a picute or documentary. Now, if we all had the opportunity to

visit these animals in their natural habitat, I'd say close all the zoos. But

since we can't...I wonder how other vegans feel about this topic. And by the

way, I am totally against animal circuses or anything like that capitalizes on

animals for our entertainment. But my question is, if a zoo is known to be well

maintained, to provide as natural an environment as

possible, and to truly care about the well-being of their animals (as well as

where they got them!) are they acceptable???? I would really like to hear a

response from anyone who has an opinion on this, whether for or against, zoos as

I am really struggling with this one internally. Thank you in advance for your

responses. Take care of yourselves and each other. :-) Renae

Hey there - all a zoo really displays is how cruel humans can be.

You're not showing kids 'wild animals', you're showing them prisoners.

Would you keep black people, or Chinese people in a cage, maybe a really

nice cage, to show kids what these people look like?

Just like there's lots of ways to find out about other cultures, there's

lots of ways to find out about other animals...

My two cents. =)
