Guest guest
good point Bob.. and I'd have to say, one holier than thou vegan can actually make it worse.. sure their diet / lifestyle is doing the least harm to the animals, but the holier than thou attitude only strengthens the opinions of the " Meat & potatoes " way of thinking that vegans are all nuts anyway! And that makes the battle all the more difficult... in my opinion, Jenni vegetarian for 10 now, vegan for a bit over 2 years... =) > Mon, 06 Oct 2003 15:54:53 -0400 > Bob Comarow <rcomarow > Re: ABOUT DOCTORS AND DRUG PRESCRIPTIONS > > NO one in society is a vegan, we can be veganish. Guest guest
Is it me, or is this just as 'holier than thou' as the 'holier than thou'ers?' A thought... - Dave - " Jenni Billings " <jenni Tuesday, October 07, 2003 11:25 AM 25 to 1 > good point Bob.. and I'd have to say, one holier than thou vegan can > actually make it worse.. sure their diet / lifestyle is doing the least harm > to the animals, but the holier than thou attitude only strengthens the > opinions of the " Meat & potatoes " way of thinking that vegans are all nuts > anyway! Guest guest
well, I 'm not sure what you mean, Dave~ I was trying ( perhaps not succeeding) in conveying my feeling that putting off a holier attitude gets in the way of compassion.... which to me is what vegan is.. compassion to the planet, the animals, and that includes other humans.. I've been vegetarian for 10, and dropped the eggs/ milk from my diet after having a discussion with my kids adn hubby.. our children are now 5 & 7, and vegan. before making the decision to drop the eggs/dairy, I spoke with two vegans I knew . One was very judgemental (which I suppose I'd use in place of holier than thou) of anyone who didnt' know EVERYTHING there was to know about being vegan.. for instance, one woman brought a soy cheese to a potluck, well, unfortunately this soycheese contained casein, which at the time was not labeled as a milk protein, so the woman who brought it had no idea ... the jugemental vegan (now referred to as JV) freaked out, and tossed the soycheese in the trash, embarrassing the woman, who had only the best intentions in bringing it.. now I " m not saying that a vegan should eat a product containing animal ingredients rather than make someone uncomfortable, but I do think that some appreciation for the fact that the cheese bringer tried to accomodate her vegan friends.. all the JV had to do was give the cheese back to the woman, and let her know why it wasn't vegan. now my other friend, the compassionate vegan (C V) when asked about why vegan issues, was much more helpful in my transition. I did not feel I would be judged by asking questions, educating myself, only supported in my quest for answers.. I just feel that being a JV and giving off an attitude can be offputting to someone looking for info.. that is what i meant when I said it " made the battle more difficult " i hope I've explained better this time.. if not i'll add more later.. kids need me! see ya jenni > > Message: 2 > Tue, 7 Oct 2003 12:16:15 -0700 > " Dave Shishkoff " <dave > Re: 25 to 1 > > Is it me, or is this just as 'holier than thou' as the 'holier than > thou'ers?' > > A thought... > > - Dave > > - > " Jenni Billings " <jenni > > Tuesday, October 07, 2003 11:25 AM > 25 to 1 > > > > good point Bob.. and I'd have to say, one holier than thou vegan can > > actually make it worse.. sure their diet / lifestyle is doing the least > harm > > to the animals, but the holier than thou attitude only strengthens the > > opinions of the " Meat & potatoes " way of thinking that vegans are all nuts > > anyway! Guest guest
I hear ya Jenni - sounds like JV was being a jerk. That wasn't a very good way to deal with the situation at all. That really has nothing to do with being vegan or not tho. There are vegan jerks, and there are many more non-vegan jerks. There are also a lot of nice vegans. (And a few nice non-vegans! For every vegan jerk i've come across, there must be at least 50 times as many insensitive meat-eating jerks who make rude comment about eating dead animals, etc. What i think you're saying is you aren't fond of judgmental PEOPLE. If you say 'judgmental vegan', it more often than not makes it look like being vegan is the negative attribute, perhaps even worse than being judgmental. - Dave > well, I 'm not sure what you mean, Dave~ > > I was trying ( perhaps not succeeding) in conveying my feeling that putting > off a holier attitude gets in the way of compassion.... which to me is what > vegan is.. compassion to the planet, the animals, and that includes other > humans.. > > I've been vegetarian for 10, and dropped the eggs/ milk from my diet after > having a discussion with my kids adn hubby.. our children are now 5 & 7, and > vegan. before making the decision to drop the eggs/dairy, I spoke with two > vegans I knew .
