Guest guest
Dear friends, The reason spaying and neutering is advocated is, because of the society we have created, many dogs and cats are murdered because they are unwanted. It is hoped that spaying and neutering will go toward lessening this mass suffering, which is why I do not formerly oppose spaying and neutering. I don`t want animals to be murdered. But I can also see both sides of the argument re: spaying and neutering, which is why it is human society that has to be studied here. We have arrogated to ourselves control of the planet and its animal populations. We have created the pet-keeping phenomenon, old as it is. We have bred animals out of their " wild " state and into their " tame " one. Now, the problems we face are the result. The animals suffer, and, naturally, that makes us with sensibilities suffer also, and we want, quite rightly, to ease their suffering. When my dog strains at the leash to join another dog by running across the road, I hold him back. Whether it is to fight, sniff a friend, or make love, I do not know. If I can, I will allow him to greet the other dog, but, even then, I am aware that I am curtailing what freedom he would otherwise have. I am not of his species, yet I am, because of living in this society, his " master " , much as I loathe the word. I love him, and I am kind to him as much as possible, but the reality is that society, and the love of a pet, has put me in the position of " slaveowner " , although I do not like it. Without me, my dog would join the strays who starve, freeze, or are rounded up as unwanted, and eventually murdered; or else he would be run over by a car on our filthy and noisy roads. So I " keep " him, I " own " him ~ because that is the society we live in, and I want to protect him and give him as much of a happy life as I can give him. Now, it is questionable whether in a free vegan society of the far future, anyone would keep pets. Our love of animals should by then have seen us, rather than want them as pets, breed them back to their " wild " state as wolves etc., and leave them alone. But that is a long way off. Everything comes back to the society we inhabit, wherein we do the best we can for animals. But yes, it is far from ideal. Ideally, they should be with their own species and independent from us.
