The move comes just days after Prime Minister Paul Martin made an official visit to Washington, in an effort to boost relations between the two countries. A day after meeting with Mr. Martin, Republican Senator Richard Lugar, chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee, and Joseph Biden, the top-ranking Democrat on the influential committee, endorsed the resolution that was adopted unanimously on Friday. " I think the timing is just a coincidence, " said Rebecca Aldworth, seal campaigner for the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in Canada. " But it's a strong statement from the American government that the American public and its representatives condemn Canada's commercial seal hunt and feel there are better economic solutions for the people of Canada's East Coast. " Having the support of senators Biden and Lugar is " tremendously important, " she said, adding it sends a strong message to the Martin government that " very serious political forces around the world " oppose the hunt. It's inevitable the two nations will disagree on certain issues, said Martin spokeswoman Amy Butcher. " We're each other's closest friend and trading partner, " she said. Stacey Neary of Sher & Blackwell, a Washington lobby group that represents IFAW, said the Senate was expected to vote on the resolution today. Steve Outhouse of the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans warned that senators would be voting on a resolution that contained " inflammatory " statements and " blatant untruths. " The department took issue with the suggestion that the seal hunt is part of an effort to boost cod stocks, and a statistic based on a 2001 report claiming 42 per cent of seals were likely skinned while alive and conscious. " We respect their right to put forward whatever opinion they feel is the right one, but there's enough facts in here that are inaccurate -- it's just inflammatory language and that's disappointing but that's their right to put that forward.
