Guest guest
Hi everyone, I am seriously thinking about becoming a vegan. I just want to give up meats because I don't know what the big fuss is about not eating dairy or eggs etc so if you could help me out on that matter as well that would be fantastic. If you can tell me how to get started that would be great too. I am only 14 and not sure how my family will think about this. I am overweight so I am hoping changing my diet will help. Not to mention I read how they treat the horses, cows, and pigs at slaughter and was appalled I want to help stop supporting the treacherous acts they do to the animals and the PMU horses. Thanks for any and all help. Amanda
Guest guest
Read Diet for a New America, as well as other vegan books. Look at the website for the store Pangea: http://www.veganstore.com/ Diet for a New America has a companion video, wh/I highly recommend. Since you are under 18, you of course need to discuss this with your parents. There are also books (one is called Vegan Nutrition) which explains how a vegan diet can be healthy. Also look for Munchie Madness, which is a vegan cookbook for teens. It also explains a lot about nutrition. Good luck! -Amy - ajb1029 Sunday, May 30, 2004 3:00 AM HELP!! Guest guest
Hi Amanda; Who does the cooking at your house? Whoever that is, I would think it necessary to have a talk with him/her/them and ask for co-operation in making the changes you would like to make with your diet. If you offer to at least help prepare the food you want to eat, or even do all your own cooking, that may help the cook(s) feel more comfortable about your proposed changes, on a practical level at least. Parents often feel concerned initially about their kids health when they announce that they want to eat a vegan diet. Eating a low-fat vegan diet definitely can help you lose weight in a very healthy way. If you get some books by Dr. John McDougall on this, they will show you lots of recipes, why it works for health as well as weight, and lots of other ideas. McDougall has a specific program tailored for weight loss, but even just the regular plan helps most people with their weight AND health by lowering the fat content of their diet. Here's his website: http://www.drmcdougall.com/ Here's some information specifically geared towards teen vegans from The Vegan Society: http://www.vegansociety.com/html/people/lifestyle/families/kids_zone/teen_vegan/ And here's a vegan message board specially for teens with VegSource: http://www.vegsource.com/talk/teen/index.html So, please have a look at these resources, I hope they are helpful to you. I'd be glad to keep in touch as you find your way along this new path. Wishing you all the best... Deborah Hi everyone, I am seriously thinking about becoming a vegan. Guest guest
Hi Amanda, I come from Melbourne, Australia, and I turned vegetarian at age 17 and (ethical) vegan at 18 (1983). My wife Kerryn is vegan, and my baby boy (8mths) and daughter (3 and a half) are all vegan too. Both my children are large for their age (my son is the size of an average 16 mth old), and very healthy (for Kerryn's articles about raising vegan children, see my website, www.vegecentric.com.au and go to 'Club Veg'). Being vegan can be very healthy, but you need to make sure you don't just cut out the animal products and try to survive on fruit and veg. As you are still young and growing, I strongly advise you see an accredited dietitian who is aware of vegetarian/vegan nutrition. Issues like getting enough iron, protein, vitamin B12, zinc, calcium etc are very important, and you need to make sure you get enough of everything. I can recommend the (American vegan Doctor) Dr Michael Greger's website www.veganMD.org which has plenty of good advice and a free monthly newsletter about vegetarianism and veganism. Kerryn is currently interviewing Dr Greger for our pro-veg newsletter Club Veg. Good Luck and Best Wishes, Tom Perry
Guest guest
Im in my thirties, have been vegan since I was 15 and still get the why dont you eat meat? nagging from my family, so families arent always supportive Amanda, it depends why you want to be vegan regarding the dairy, eggs (dont forget honey, and additives), sounds like for you its many reason (weight loss, animal rights) if you still arent sure why some vegans oppose dairy, eggs, honey, etc, look up some books / web sites that detail how these products are produced, that should explain things good luck , " Deborah Pageau " <dpageau@d...> wrote: > Hi Amanda; > > Who does the cooking at your house?
