Guest guest
Hi Janet. Thanks for the note. A few organisations (I respect each of them) who believe that supplements are the only reliable non-animal sources are: Vegan Society http://www.vegansociety.com/html/food/nutrition/b12/ Vegetarian Society http://www.vegsoc.org/info/b12.html Vegetarian Resource Group http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/b12.htm#possible After re-reading all of their info, I'm thinking I either have to go with supplements or back to the eggs/milk option. Although my b12 levels have been fine for years, a few months ago my doctor told me that I was " borderline " and recommended a supplement to ensure I have enough. I just can't see eating vitamins grown in a lab as being better though. A couple of years ago, I tried an egg as I had been thinking of it for a while. I thought I would really enjoy the taste, but I didn't.....and the " taste " lasted for days. Ugh. I'll have to give it some more thought I suppose. I know labels don't mean much, but it would be strange to think I wouldn't be an official " vegan " any longer. Where would I hand in my membership card? ;-( Keith > Tue, 11 Jan 2005 13:42:17 -0800 (PST) > Fluff <flufff_00 > Re: Re:Health Alert For Vegans > > I'm under the impression that you can obtain B-12 from tempeh and sea > vegetables...any thoughts on this? > And I agree with you Keith about using natural means to get vitamins and > minerals. Guest guest
I would think " artificial " vegan supplements would be far preferable to supporting the cruelty that goes into egg production. ----- Original message ----- KEITH LAWRANCE Wednesday, January 12, 2005 9:23 PM Re: Digest Number 1235 Hi Janet. Guest guest
I found a good website: http://www.veganforlife.org/nutrit.htm#healthy Dear Keith, I, too, have had strong cravings for eggs, especially recently that i'm pregnant. My mouth would slobber if i see someone eat eggs. I used to resist it so much when my x-husband and I used to go for breakfast. I would order scramble tofu " eggs " and he would order the real eggs. Although i would not enjoy my dish, I used to still resist the leftovers he would leave on his plate. Last week, I was shopping at Trader Joe's with my mom and my heart cringed with pain when she bought a carton of eggs, even if they were eggs from a free range chicken, it's still considered an animal exploitation because once those chickens are unable to produce eggs any longer, they will be discarded and killed. The next morning, those cravings only got stronger and stronger. I even thought of writing e-mail to the vegan list asking them for an advice. With great amount of guilt, i ended up cooking two eggs and eating them. I have to admit that I did enjoy them. It's been a week now and i do not have those cravings anymore! I still do not feel right about what I did because it's against my principles and what I believe in... but it's behind me right now. I am still conscientious about the pain and the suffering of animals and I am making a difference by eliminating slaughterhouse products from my food and from products I use and that what matters, not a vegan label. I have one concern though. I am four months pregnant and I would love to raise my child to be vegan. All my family members are carnivores and they all claim that infants will need animal products to be healthy. Of course i know that this is a misconception, but since this is my first pregnancy, I need help, though, in getting all the information I can to raise a healthy vegan child. If anyone of you knows of any good book I could buy or any good websites I could visit, i would greatly appreciate it if you provide this info to me. Thanx, Suha KEITH LAWRANCE <keithlawrance wrote: Hi Janet. Thanks for the note.
