Guest guest
New group to help protect whales By Fiona McIlwaine Biggins 09 February 2005 Northern Ireland's first conservation society for the protection of whales and dolphins is 'taking the plunge' in the hope of increasing local support for the worldwide society, and raising awareness of the plight of these gentle creatures. The first local action group for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society is forming in Northern Ireland and an information evening will be held on February 16, at 7pm, in Ballynafeigh Community House, Ormeau Road, Belfast. The WDCS is the global voice for the protection of cetaceans - whales, dolphins and porpoises - and their environment. Their aim is to reduce and ultimately eliminate the continuing threats to cetaceans and their habitats and to raise awareness the need to protect them in their natural environment. The local group's objectives will be to campaign locally; organise local events; participate in nationally organised events, such as sponsored walks; give public talks and distribute leaflets and collection tins. Local spokesman Steve Ramsey said: " If you are interested in whales and dolphins, would like to help in their protection and have some time to give, please come along to this event and register. " Mr Ramsey can contacted at shadowrider125@h... or on 07796 901780.
