Guest guest
Hi, my name Stephanie and i'm 18 and from the uk. I have been a vegitarian for 4years and am also trying to go vegan. My mum wasn't very impressed about that because she has this idea that if i turn vegan that i will be really ill. I've explained all the facts but there is no budging her...anyways it's up to me what i eat. I'm finding it hard to be vegan. I'm not a good cook and i don't have a lot of time as a student. Is there anyone from the uk online? i shop in tescos and holland and barret but to be a true vegan i need to know what is in the foods i eat..eg. is there egg in pasta? i haven't got a clue. and what about bread. these little things are getting in the way of being a vegan. does anyone know where i can get good vegan food in the uk? Cheers! stephanie
Guest guest
Hi, Stephanie! Well done for wanting to stick to your convictions. I work for Viva! in the UK and i can arrange to send you a copy of our L-Plate Vegan guide (have a look on our website, here: http://www.viva.org.uk/guides/l-plate/vegan/index.htm) and you can read about it. If you want a copy, just send me an email on info and i will have one posted to you. I would also recommend that you get yourself a copy of either the Animal Free Shopper (available through Viva or the Vegan Society) or Animal Ingredients A-Z (available here: http://www.akuk.com/). Just search for " animal ingredients " from the home page at AK Press. I don't suppose that you have a Sainsbury's nearby, do you? They're labelling everything for vegans these days - even household products, just as the Co-Op have been doing for yonks. Most pasta should be fairly easy to decipher. I know, for instance, that the Tesco organic whole wheat pasta is just organic durum wheat and water. Bread: go for the bread with the simplest ingredients and w/o all of the preservatives. Again, Tesco's organic baguette and their whole wheat sliced are fine. Hovis label their bread suitable for vegans (if it is). You'll soon get the hang of things once you've familiarised yourself with some of the most common hidden ingredients. I don't consider myself a culinary genius, but i've managed veganism for 15 years. So, best of luck and write to Viva if you need any help! k@ (kat) On Mar 10, 2005, at 09:24, dirrtyfighter2000 wrote: > > > > Hi, my name Stephanie and i'm 18 and from the uk. Guest guest
Dear Stephanie, Being a vegan requires lots of label reading when you do groceries shopping. At first, it's going to be time consuming... you will then learn how to scan the words you're trying to stay away from; such as Lactic Asid, Whey, Casein, Honey...etc. Some pasta noodle's are made from eggs and some aren't. Same thing with bread. You just have to read the labels. Also, this site might be helpful for you: http://www.vrg.org/nutshell/faqingredients.htm And I'm sure many people here will provide you with more help. Guest guest
Hi Stephanie; In the UK, do food products have the ingredients printed on the wrapper? In Canada here, manufactuers HAVE to put ingredients on the label. For example, a loaf of bread would have a very small print area on the wrapper than would say something like " Ingredients: whole wheat flour, water, sugar, yeast, salt. " There might also be names of preservatives or nutritional additives. There are websites that have lists for vegans of what additives are vegan and which are animal-based. If you stick to whole, recognizable plant foods like whole grains (rice, millet, quinoa, buckwheat, oats, etc), legumes (different coloured beans, peas, lentils, sprouts, etc), whole fruits and vegetables... you are safest. I mostly eat a few whole fruits while I make a large pot of a veggie stew with a handful of grain, some cooked legumes and whatever veggies I have in the fridge. It's simple and delicious! Just please make sure to take B12! ... and a tablespoon of ground flax seed per day is also wise for the Omega 3 fatty acid. And avoid " junk " food like pop and deep fried foods. They may be vegan, but not healthy! Here is a website that may be of interest to you *AND* your Mom. There are some specifics for teens farther down in the article. http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/veg_diets_for_children.html And here is a message board specially for veggie teens! http://www.vegsource.com/talk/teen/index.html Best of luck! Guest guest
Hiya Stephanie, I mainly shop in Sainsbury's and Co-op supermarkets - they both mark which of their foods are suitable for vegans. And I tend to find smaller health food shops have more vegan stuff that Holland & Barrett do. Most pasta is vegan though, like you say, some does have egg in (but that usually makes it more of a yellowy colour, so is fairly easy to spot). Check out www.shop-mate.net (which is our own forthcoming service) and www.isitvegan.info for more help. Or let me know if you want any more help - I remember what it was like when I first started being vegan.... Guest guest
Hi Stephanie. I'm in the US, but I visited the UK last October, and I did some advance research trying to make sure I'd have something to eat when I got there. There are lots of vegan organizations in the UK, and I think the International Vegetarian Union is based there. Do a google search on +vegan +uk, and you'll be busy for hours, if not days. :-) Jim Sinclair jisincla On Thu, 10 Mar 2005, dirrtyfighter2000 wrote: > > > > Hi, my name Stephanie and i'm 18 and from the uk. Guest guest
Stephanie, I'm going vegan in the US and recently printed off this list I found at PETA.org ( http://www.peta.org/accidentallyVegan/ ). It list of common foods that are surprisingly vegan. I don't know if you have the same brands in the UK but it has helped me with my grocery shopping. Good luck!
