Guest guest
Death by fire Farzana Contractor | Thursday, April 07, 2005 13:47:14 IST I returned from a three-day sabbatical to such awful news and gory pictures, it made my skin crawl. Burnt paws, scarred faces, and charred bodies. Those of helpless animals, which may have been locked, perhaps even chained, in cages while they burned! Terrible. To think these are animals which belong to the coldest regions of the world, areas which are freezing, where there is snow and the waters, ice cold... ironic that they should get death by fire! How sad, how very, very sad. There is something about such an incident that can soften even thick-skinned people. When you think about the general helplessness of animals, the fact that unscrupulous people exploit them, makes you feel outraged. I am. How on earth were these animals - snow dogs, Eskimo cats, sea lions, etc., allowed into the country? And then traipsed through hot and hostile India. Surely we don't have adequate travel arrangements for such sensitive creatures! I believe people like Maneka Gandhi, Anuradha Sawhney, and Col J. C. Khanna did their best to prevent the shows from happening. To no avail. Knowing Maneka, I am sure she would have done her utmost and that she too failed is shocking. No, let me explain, what I mean is it is shocking that our country can have such corrupt officials that the combined might of these concerned people, all powerful enough in their own right, could not succeed. Imagine their cheek to invite Maneka to inaugurate the Kolkata show! Without doubt, they must have singed at her wrath and response. This tragedy has made me change the way I look at circuses. No, we can do without them. At least we can do without wild animals that belong in the wilderness, performing. It is demeaning for them. I am sure if they could talk they would have told us as much. Recently I was in Toronto. And I was lucky the Cirque du Soleil, the famous circus of Montreal, was in town. It was fascinating. The performances, the clothes, the music, the various themes. There were jokers, there were the acrobats, there were funny tricks and what have you, but there were no big or wild animals - yet it was the best circus I had ever witnessed. I guess around the world things are achanging, it is only when they look eastwards that funny ideas get into crooked minds. Fact is our system stinks. It is so shameful we live in that part of the world where anything can be bought for a price. That this blasted Russian State Circus could get its way using a loophole, that this circus was a foreign one and as such the rules didn't apply to them, and only to Indian animals, is a joke. Seems our courts have turned into a circus! Farzana Contractor is the CEO of this newspaper and the editor of UpperCrust.
