SECRETARY: Dear Friends of Animals, This month we faced several problems as our ambulance broke down while bringing dogs from IDA. We faced a lot of difficulties as it went to the garage and our work was stuck up in its absence. We desperately need to replace the ambulance otherwise all rescue activities will be stopped. Our Volunteer cum Driver Kishore worked hard against several odds carrying the dogs to safety in the absence of the ambulance. Volunteer Rahul deserves a special mention as he woke-up at 1.00am and patrolled all Shiva Temples and rescued two Cobras from snake charmers on the occasion of Maha shivratri. If you are based in Suburbs of Mumbai and wish to join the dedicated young team of PAWS ,please call us 9820161114 & make a difference towards the life of animals. Yours for animals, Nilesh Bhanage ................................................................... 2. MONKEY RESCUE: We faced a lot of opposition when the PAWS team took initiative to stop bird selling, parrot astrology, snake charming etc. Despite protests from several quarters the PAWS team began to rescue monkeys who were being forced to beg. On 1st of February PAWS office received information about a monkey and some pigeons being kept in a house as pets in poor conditions at Kalyan. PAWS team swung into action and with the help of forest department rescued a baby Rhesus monkey which was being nursed by its mother when taken away and was starved of water and tied in the heat to a tree all day. The monkey which was rescued by PAWS volunteers Kishore, ShivPrasad & Nilesh with the help of Range Forest Office Kalyan, was sheltered in Thane SPCA Animal Hospital after giving a Statement to the police. ---- 3. ANTI-RABIES VACCINATION DRIVE IN DAHISAR: On the request of Paws supporter Bernadine Pramodhan a vaccination camp in Dahisar in IC Extension colony was organized which included an anti-Rabies drive for the strays in her area. SNAKES RESCUE ON MAHASHIVRATRI FESTIVAL: On Mahashivratri & Nagpanchmi festival, Each year hundreds of wild snakes are captured illegally by charmers for exhibiting outside Shiva temple. These snakes are starved, defanged and generally treated cruelly. Once their glands are removed, their mouths are stitched and they are forced fed on milk by devotees. PAWS started its mission in 1998 to rescue snakes from these charmers, treat and release them in their natural habitat where they hunt in the natural way. Till the date PAWS has rescued hundreds of snakes with the help of local wildlife dept and released them back in nature. This Mahashivratri festival our dedicated volunteer Rahul Pawar along with four other volunteers went on a night patrol of the area close to Shiva temples and were able to rescue two cobras with their fangs intact from the charmers. As they were still healthy they were immediately released in the forest under certificate of approval from the Wildlife Department. ................................................................. 7.
