Guest guest
How about educating the public about these values? Is it not the failure to TRULY educate the public that makes it possible for ANY US political party to NOT have a high profile pro-environment agenda? And have the Democrats REALLY done much to educate the US peoples? I think not! What makes Democrats look strong is putting them alongside some anti-environmental Republicans of high profile, but if we lined up all the Democratic voters, how pro-environment would the AVERAGE really BE? Not that great! That's why nonprofits that PURPORT to educate th epublic should be about JUST THAT: educating the public - NOT MERELY about taking shortcuts (that keep money flowing in, hopefully) that say little except that the other side (party) is bad. That kind of " short-cutting " is NOT how the public is educated. Gene Karpinski LCV <lcv wrote: April 20, 2006 Dear Maynard S., In 2006 we as Americans mark Earth Day from a very different place than we did in 2005, or for that matter, any Earth Day since its inception. In 2006 we mark Earth Day with much of our Gulf Coast and one of our major cities still staggered by natural disaster. In 2006 we mark Earth Day with $3 per gallon gasoline. In 2006 we mark Earth Day with the retired chair of Exxon-Mobil receiving a $400 million goodbye kiss. And in 2006 we mark Earth Day with the dramatic realization that global warming is not coming, rather it is, in fact, already here. This Earth Day 2006, it's time to demand real government leadership on energy, environment and conservation issues. That's why the League of Conservation Voters -- the independent political voice of the environment -- is working day and night all over this nation to support public officials who understand that Earth Day 2006 is a different day indeed. This Earth Day, we have our work cut out for us, fighting those in the House, Senate, and Bush Administration who put corporate profits ahead of the public's interest in a safe and healthy environment. But with your help, LCV will bring the environment to the forefront of the 2006 election: We will use a winning combination of grassroots campaigning, volunteer mobilization, and cutting edge television and Internet outreach to educate voters before they head to the polls. We will continue to hold policy makers accountable for their action (or inaction) on votes that impact the environment. And we will work to elect pro-environment candidates – and defeat anti-environment candidates – on November 7th. Consider this: A change of just two seats in the Senate could mean that the campaign by Big Oil and the Bush Administration to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge could be stopped in its tracks. Your support could make this a reality. Ultimately, Earth Day and your League of Conservation Voters both find themselves in a very different place in 2006; Earth Day 2006 is a wake-up call for our great nation, particularly with the understanding that true change only comes through the public process -- through our elected representatives at ALL levels. With that, Earth Day 2006 finds LCV poised to elevate individuals who " get it " to new heights and replace those who don't. And together we will change a nation!
