Guest guest
Greetings, All. I am hoping that you will be able to suggest vegan 'snack' foods that are high in protein and low in carbs. I am looking for foods that will assist in my weight loss and work-out endeavour and would be helpful for satiation/cravings/pick-me-ups. Protein bars, fake jerky, etc. that I typically eat for the above reasons are high in carbs. I am not looking to completely go carb free, but just to be more aware of them. Any vegan suggestions would be much appreciated! Thank you, in advance, for your assistance! Happy 2007 to all! ~ Renae
Guest guest
Hi Renae; I'm glad you are focusing on vegan diet for healthy, effective weight control! I understand that it is actually THE best way to do it. Have a look at this: http://www.pcrm.org/news/release061219.html As you may notice in that article, it points at limiting FAT intake rather than carbs. It certainly makes sense to limit refined, empty carbs like sugar and white flour. There is a lot more satisfaction, staying power and nutrition in complex carbs (whole grains, whole fruits, legumes and all the veggies you can eat). Minimizing the high fat foods (oily dressings, fried food, margarine, nut butters) is the most important part for weight loss. Here's why: http://www.pcrm.org/health/prevmed/weight_control.html Dr. McDougall has similar recommendations: http://www.drmcdougall.com/med_obesity.html Wishing you all the best, Deborah Greetings, All. The first food that comes to mind is nuts. Also, peanut butter, spread on apple slices or whole grain crackers. Or unsweetened soy milk. Or veggies and hummus. Good luck! Guest guest
Heya Renae - can you please explain why you think that carbs are harmful to you losing weight? As i understand it, excess calories from protein will convert to fat just as quickly as excess calories from carbs (or fat.) So the trick is to limit calories, not necessarily where the calories are from. There are a lot more health problems and complications due to over-eating protein than carbs.... Carbs are good for our bodies, they're the energy we need. Protein requires a complex and taxing process to use it as energy. Why put your body through that stress? Agreeably, some carbs are not as desirable, like processed white sugar, but there are tons of great carbs out there otherwise. Good luck! - Dave ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ :: vegan cycling :: ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- !! http://Cycling.TheNoisies.com !! 4. Nuts and roasted soy " nuts " come to mind, but I think it's not healthy to do the low-carb thing, so my snacks tend toward stuff you don't want to eat.
