Guest guest
I am avoiding nightshade veggies : the PPET foods (potatoes, peppers, eggplant and tomatoes) Foods I love to eat very much!!! (for me, there is definate connection between eating them and pain) I may be allergic my sister is definately allergic to tomatoes and peppers. If anyone is avoiding these foods what do they use as a similar substitution in recipes that ususally have such ingrediants? some things I do instead are: instead of tomatoes--I may use mangos instead of potatoes---I might try cauflower or sweetpotatoes for hot peppers--I'd consider horseradish or mustard seed or ginger or onions bell peppers-maybe celery will do sweet red bell peppers--perhaps carrots I need more Ideas!!! thanks kim aka mamatazz
Guest guest
hi mamatazz ... i'm not sure what constitutes a nightshade veggie; i've never heard of such an allergy, but anyway - if you're not allergic to it, what about Jerusalem artichokes instead of potatoes? green or yellow zucchini has a similar texture to eggplant when cooked - do you like the flavour of parsnips? instead of potatoes? for green peppers, snow peas could sub for texture, but flavour?? who knows - it's so distinct! i can't imagine how hard it would be to have allergies ... we'll just have to send some yummy tried and true recipes that don't have these items as ingredients! tara
Guest guest
Thanks Tara! my mind tends to be slow on substitutes (prolly the main reason it took me so long to become a complete veggi/vegan) but once I get going on substitution ideas it gets clicking and I get creative and dont know why it was so hard to come up with before! gosh, i know what you mean about the distinctive flavor of peppers both bell and hot!! I love that taste. In fact, my favoritest veggies are prolly the nightshades!!! I hope I don't have to avoid them all together or forever, I'm hoping moderation will work for me. These veggies and spices (cayenne) used to be an ingredient in all my dinner and lunches! I read that some arthritis (mine was a originally atributed to the MMR vaccine) is aggrevated by nightshades as if they are an allergy. (there's an author named Fredrickson that made the link, and also the author robert buist has a book on food chemical sensitivities) Nightshade veggies contain active alkaloids of solanindine and solanin (which aggrevate and perhaps even cause some forms of arthritis). my sister gets hives from those veggies except for potatoes and i dont know, she may be able to eat eggplant (she does fine with cucumbers/zuccini and squash foods). anyway, for being so sweet to offer to post some nonnightshade recipes! kim aka mamatazz In a message dated 3/7/2000 12:28:36 PM Pacific Standard Time, p-pie writes: << P or T <p-pie hi mamatazz ... i'm not sure what constitutes a nightshade veggie; i've never heard of such an allergy, but anyway - if you're not allergic to it, what about Jerusalem artichokes instead of potatoes? green or yellow zucchini has a similar texture to eggplant when cooked - do you like the flavour of parsnips? instead of potatoes? for green peppers, snow peas could sub for texture, but flavour?? who knows - it's so distinct! i can't imagine how hard it would be to have allergies ... we'll just have to send some yummy tried and true recipes that don't have these items as ingredients! tara >>
