And since b-complex vitamins are depleted quickly during stress and its impossible to avoid stress in life, at stressful times in life, I imagine that it can deplete rapidly. my question is, how do you know that you are deficient, I mean what are the symptoms? Also, I consume a lot of Nutritional yeast (I have all kinds of recipes, and thankfully the b-12 out of the b complex vitamins is not destroyed by the cooking process) I eat it everyday, and so does my toddler. we also consume alot of vitamin c rich foods and put crystal vitamin c (from trader joes) in many of our recipes for added flavor. and vitamin c is supposed to be very helpful for assimilating b-complex and iron. (I'm very health concious, my origional reasons for going vegan) since you're long time vegan and health concious, I have only become vegan just before concieving my son who is now almost 15months old, would you mind going into detail about your deficiency. by the way, I had blood work at the begining of my l pregnancy that said I was low folic acid, even though I supplemented everyday with folic acid as soon as I desired to get pregnant (and that was before my dh got his vascetomy reversed, I also took high b-complex for many years because I used to have terrible carpal tunnel syndrome, so I was quite shocked to be deficient, since me and my ds were so healthy, I wonder if the test is accurate) Did anyone explain what caused your deficency? I know some people (particularly elderly nonvegans, but I think can happen to anyone), become b12 deficent because of digestion/assimilation problems. did your body reject suplimentation of b12 or other food sources such as Nutritional yeast? did you're diet also include b12 source on a regular or somewhat regular basis? why do you think this happened and what do you recommend to avoid this problem? thanks in advance, kim aka mamatazz

Most people do *not* have an intrinsic factor problem, so as long as you make sure your food is supplemented... many foods have it, including soy milk, nutritional yeast (which is GREAT on popcorn, by the way!)... you should be fine! Guest guest
I've been vegan 5 years now, and every time I have had blood drawn for any reason, I have the doctor order a b12 test, along with iron and cholesterol. I had a blood test a couple months ago and my b12 reading was in the top 25% of the range. I've taken a vegetarian multivitamin pretty regularly over the past 5 years, along with moderate consumption of nutritional yeast. Just another data point, Brett > bkwildcray > > Did anyone explain what caused your deficency? Guest guest
I did not take vitamins or eat any vitamin fortified foods. I was eating things without labels. Mostly fruits, vegies, grains, etc... Whole grains, no sugar. Now, I take a vegie vitamin a few days a week when I remember. My doctor tested me for b12. I would've never imagined, but will request it at each annual physical. Symptoms are terrible and damage might be irresversable. It is fatal and will kill you if gone unchecked. Mood swings, exhaustions, stress, irritable, and just kinda paranoid, crying alot, not trusting others, etc... Most books will cover this and the symptoms are almost endless. I've used some of that yellow powder yeast, I think it is, but I don't know that much about how to make it taste good. I'd try it more if I knew how. I have lots of it, but it's not totally fresh. Is it kept on shelf or in refer? How long would it stay fresh? Guest guest
How do you make the popcorn with yeast. Is it airpop and how does it stick? If you sprinkle them on when the popcorn is hot, they will stick pretty well. What I generally do is to first spray the popcorn with Bragg's Amino Acids (kind of like soy sauce spray) and then put on the flakes. It's really good ! Guest guest
Thanks Carol. I have Bragg's Amino Acids I bought months ago, but haven't even opened it! It is a 32 oz bottle and I could attach a sprayer if you tell me this is the kind you use. I also have the yeast flakes that have gone unused. I'm a creature of habit and my family is not vegetarian, so I don't get alot of veggie ideas at home. I get most ideas from books or the internet, and a few veg friends. I love being a vegan. My flax pancakes are a big hit. I use 1/2 garbanzo flour and 1/2 grain flour of any type. I grind up flax seeds and then add water or soymilk. Even sour soymilk works good, like buttermilk. Some non-aluminum baking powder and sea salt, and they are wonderful. It's a Sunday regular now, with blueberries.
