Guest guest
Vegetarian Chef Mollie Katzen, to appear on Channel 44 Public TV, Boston, MA, supposedly this week, but I've also heard (or been told) that this program will begin at 8:00 AM, June 25 - not exactly a choice time, via the New Hampshire Public TV www.molliekatzen.com This seems to have a certain amount of support from the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, over on Huntington Avenue in Boston. It is also interesting that Mollie Katzen is among the more popular Radcliffe alums, from around the time that I was at Harvard (millennia ago, it seems). There is also on Mollie's website a photo gallery of the foods she presents. Perhaps some vegetarians with photographic skills would like to become more visible by sharing their photographs of expert culinary dishes. In addition, perhaps vegetarians would like to see MORE vegetarian culinary programs on TV. Mollie Katzen is decidedly NOT vegan, although she shares a number of really GOOD THOUGHTS (IMO) on her website regarding organic food and agriculture, natural health, selecting good, fresh produce, the importance of vegetables, and good taste in meal preparation. In addition, Mollie has MELLOWED OUT A LOT since her earlier " heavy food " days when she was starting the Moosewood Restaurant in upstate New York. Today, her foods are lighter and rely less upon animal ingredients, and are decidedly leaning TOWARDS the more popular vegan fare, although she still is addicted to the use of honey, which she seems to throw into a number of dishes -- either desserts -- or along with vinegar in her entrees and side dishes. I once cooked professionally, ages ago, BEFORE going to Harvard, and I still can't fathom being addicted to honey -- but that seems to be a trait on MANY of the vegetarian culinary lists I see. COMPETITION among the vegetarian chefs (aka BATTLE OF THE BANDANAS) Meanwhile, my observation of the evident COMPETITION among the numerous well-known vegetarian chefs and skilled culinary artisans around North America is that these folks need a certain amount of " pull " to get landed in a TV network. In the interim, a truly GOOD option is to get alterative culinary programs on the cable TV networks in your area. Joyce Cavallo, MBA, photographer, film maven, ethical vegetarian and activist, is coordinating a New England regional -- then eventually continental effort -- to get competing vegetarian (read vegan) culinary programs on TV stations throughout North America, along with educational materials regarding a wide variety of health, ecological, nutritional, and humane issues touching on diet. Please e-mail Joyce Cavallo at LegalKind or me at VRC Joyce could also use some help with videotape preparation, and some financial contributions for her projects. However, if you wish to contact Mollie Katzen, you may send Mollie an e-mail directly at . Mollie. Mollie promises on her website that she will read all her mail, but that she will not be able to answer personally. You may also wish to see Mollie's program added to the venue at your own Public TV station, which is MUCH easier if one Public TV station is already carrying it. Maynard S.
