Guest guest
Supermarket to set up new hen-houses Supermarket chain Asda has laid plans for a scheme to improve free range conditions for hens. The company has teamed up with Thames Valley Eggs Ltd to develop the first fully mobile free range units powered by wind and solar energy. As part of a trial, four stores in the Norfolk area will be home to a mobile hen-house, giving customers the chance to inspect the hen-houses and the condition of the chickens. Eggs produced in the mobile hen-houses will be on sale in Asda stores. The units, to be sited on store car parks, are accredited by the RSPCA, and allow chickens to move around and spend more time outside. Asda's business unit director for dairy David Cheesewright said: 'We are delighted to be working with Thames Valley to deliver a great quality product from hens kept in such impressive conditions. If the trial is successful we hope to provide more of our stores with eggs produced in this way at no extra cost to our customers.' Paul Scott, sales director at Thames Valley, said: 'We are already getting a very positive response to the units. With the EU looking set to place a ban on the production of new cages in 2003 and a complete ban on cages in 2012, this is definitely a move in the right direction for farmers.'
