Guest guest
I sent this message to a friend who has worked for the phone company for 20+ years, he says it is nonsense. He says it may have been true on some old business systems, but not on a home system. Guest guest
He's right - mostly. I automatically assumed that this was an urban legend (it had all the markings of one), so I went to http://www.urbanlegends.com (a great resource for looking into these emailed warnings, and a fun read as well!) to check it out. A quick search later, I'd learned, to my surprise, that the scam is possible on a PBX system, if it is installed incorrectly. PBXs are not, strictly speaking, " old " business systems; they're still used by many prominent organizations. But, since it's not possible on a home phone (unless you have a PBX in your house, and I actually know a few people who do - I work in IT and have techie-geek friends!), the first line of this warning makes it untrue. The page I found at the Urban Legends archive was here: http://www.urbanlegends.com/ulz/90pound.html And AT & T has an official warning about the scam here: http://www.att.com/features/0398/90pound.html HTH Krista Jan Gordon wrote: > I sent this message to a friend who has worked for the phone company for 20+ > years, he says it is nonsense. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead Why Vegan? http://www.veganoutreach.org/wv/
