Regarding Casein ...

My understanding of casein is that it is the only protein that Mad Cow

disease cannot be removed from.

What other information do you all have? Inquiring minds need to know!

If you go to www.notmilk.com and look at FAQ #19 it is explained very well. This is where I first learned about it and found out that it was in my cheese substitute.

Hey I just thought I would add my 2 cents worth on this... Why anyone

would want to eat Casein anyway is beyond me.. it is a type of polymer

derived from cows milk that they use in plastic shopping bags as well... I

did not know this before I tried it and I kid you not when I tried a soy

cheese with it in it my dinner nearly came up... both my fiance and I

found this cheese to taste very plastic like and when we found out about

them using this is plastic bags as well we knew why... I can't imagine it

being all that healthy...

Anyways thats my little imput :)

It is a milk protein, when it is in cow's milk, it is important and healthy for a cow. It is also in human milk and all other mammal's milk. It isn't necessarily a horrible thing, but the cow's milk casein isn't meant for human consumption so that casein is not good for humans, but it is very nutritious to a cow, we aren't cows so of course it wouldn't be good for us.

Casein is even found in breastmilk. Just as cow's milk is the perfect food

.... for a calf, breastmilk is the perfect food for a human child. IMHO ..

it has it's place. The casein found in a cow's milk is intended and

designed for the calf while the casein found in a mother's milk is intended

and designed for her nursling.

Possibly not but that fish died before they put it in the can. And if it hadn't, it would have done shortly afterwards.

Hate to post like this, but I thought the post below was a little out of line. I enjoy the recipies I get from this listserv; however, if they're going to be unkind, pushy, preachy or generally off-putting, I can do without it. Let's be kind to one another, shall we?

Jodi, do you have more information about this? From the reading I've done, I didn't think that the prions that cause mad cow disease can be destroyed in any portion of the beef or dairy product produced from infected cows. Can you share more?

I second this motion ... I joined this list because it strongly stated that

this list was NOT to be used for flaming and activism. Perhaps such

thoughts are best left unsaid or taken to an e-group that is specifically

used for activism. Let's keep in mind that not all vegans (myself included)

are not vegan for ethical reasons rather for health reasons. We are all on

our own journies and have joined this list as a resource to aid us in this.

While each person has a freedom to speak and to have an opinion, sometimes

opting for being respectful is the higher road.

Thanks Jodi. . .I, too, am vegan for health reasons and it has taken me over

Why was it out of line? Thought I was posting to Vegan recipes. Can you eat tuna and be vegan? Let's be kind to one another - except tuna.
