Ok, it sounded a bit too much like a hoax letter to me, so I looked it up on the web, and amazingly enough guess what I found. A site of urban myths with a letter that is word for word the same as the one we all saw. Here is the site:

Can you believe some people. After all, any vegan book I ever read mentions how canola is actually very good for an oil, and not only that but it has been around for quite a long time, and has not just come on the market like the fake letter says.
