My life long vegetarian daughter just turned 22. She is as

healthy as can be, never sick with as much as a cold. Ditto

for me, vegetarian for 25+ years. My carnivorous 16 yr old

daughter is also very healthy so maybe it is the luck of

good genes too. Your boyfriend is mistaken though. You can

be just fine without meat.

I was also an extremely picky eater, in fact my now-husband had told someone

that he could never marry someone like me because of my eating habits. I

only ate red meat and fast food and pasta, no salads or veggies. I became a

vegetarian about 16 years ago for the sake of the animals and we've been

married over 12 -he became one 11 years ago. I have learned to like so many

different veggies. We do the fake meats though. Morningstar and Boca make

great burgers, bacon and sausage. You do not have to worry about getting

enough protein as long as you are eating - there is protein in almost

everything you eat. Good luck!

In Australia they market mushrooms as "meat for vegetarians" because of their protein content. They are also the basis for a number of "fake meat" products. If you didn't like the pretend mince, then try some other things - here I can get great mock chicken from my local chinese vege market, as well as fake seafood. Nothing wrong with being picky - just keep trying things and you are bound to find something you like!

Re: Me and Soy Chips

Angie... Hi, I'm new to the list, and was in the same place you are about 5 years ago. Try low-fat cottage cheese...unless you are vegan, this is a great source of protein. Also, try yogurt, if you like it. Beans, any beans have protein too. You do not need as much protein as you might think you do...I like chocolate soy milk too. I don't like the regular or the vanilla, so if I have milk its the chocolate one. There are LOTS of ways to get protein. These are just a few that helped me to get started. Angie (and all),

Although I'm new to this group (yesterday!), I've been a vegetarian for over

30 years (since Woodstock). In the '60s there was a popular source book for

vegetarians. I don't know if it's still in print, but it explains quite

clearly how you can get all the protein you need by eating foods in

combination. It's called " Diet for a Small Planet, " by Frances Moore Lappe

(not certain of spelling). --Remember, millions of Hindus in India have been

eating a vegetarian diet for centuries, without any problems. The other

thing to bear in mind is that Americans eat way more protein than they need.

Don't let your boyfriend bully you about this! As long as you don't force

him to give up meat, he has no right to get in your face. And if he can't

see that, it might be time to get a new boyfriend! After all, every healthy

relationship should be based on respect.

good luck!

Good idea! (and that is the author) There is also Recipes

for a Small Planet by Ellen Ewald, a sequel of sorts. My

daughter ran off with my Diet for a Small Planet and I

found a replacement on amazon.com This wasn't that long

ago so you could probably find one there too.

Stick with it. There are tons of great veggie recipes that are simple to

make. Once you've been off meat for awhile, you'll wonder why you ever ate

it to begin with. I've been veggie for 15 years and the smell and thought

of eating meat makes me ill, literally.

I've never had the Gimme Lean stuff (Never really liked sausage), but I've

had chili, tacos, etc with the Morningstar Farms " burger " crumbles & had a

hard time telling the difference between it & meat.

With all due respect, your boyfriend is a chef, not a nutritionist. He's

completely wrong about the nutritional stuff. You can get all the vitamins,

minerals, nutrients, proteins you need from veggies, without all the heart

clogging fat & cholesterol. Here are some web sites with nutrition & other

info. for vegetarians.

This should make the transition to vegetarianism all the easier! I make

great " cheesesteaks " with thinly sliced mushrooms & peppers. You can make

anything you ate before without meat ( & it will be better.) I'll try to

post some easy to make recipes today. Let us know what some of your

favorite dishes are & we'll come up with some do-able recipes for you!

Good Luck!
