FDA outlines safety issues, Buckeye Egg responds

The FDA issued the warning after an inspection of Buckeye Egg`s medicated feed mill in Croton.

02/06/2003

Newark, Buckeye Egg Farm has said that it is taking steps to address several safety issues outlined in a letter it received in March from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.  The FDA issued the warning after an inspection of Buckeye Egg`s medicated feed mill in Croton revealed that the farm was not following steps to insure that residue from medicated feed did not end up in food meant for human consumption. Buckeye Egg responded to the FDA with a detailed list of regulations it intends to uphold. Matthew Doyle, spokesman and chief financial officer for the farm, was confused by reports of noncompliance.  Doyle said one particular substance caught the FDA`s attention, but that the farm and the FDA are currently working together to determine if that substance violates government standards. Since March 4, the day the FDA issued the letter, management of the day-to-day operations of the farm has changed hands.  Deborah Abbott, public information officer for the Ohio Department of Agriculture`s Livestock Environmental Permitting Program, said that when Buckeye Egg`s contract was up April 30 with CLM Group LLC, the company signed one with a new company -- Fresh Eggs Inc. Doyle declined to give details about the new management.  "It honestly doesn`t matter who`s managing," Abbott said. "It just matters that they are following the permits."  Since the process of revoking Buckeye Egg`s environmental permits began in November, the state has visited the farm almost weekly for compliance checks, Abbott said. This case is separate from the FDA`s recent warning letter.  The revocation of permits remains ongoing. The environmental permit requires that the farm do two things: Properly manage manure, and control insects and rodent problems. Mark Anthony, communications director for the Ohio Department of Agriculture, said the issue of drug residue in human foods is an industry-wide concern.  "We have very strict regulations on medicated feed manufacturing, and strict regulations designed to keep prohibited material out of animal feed in order to keep diseases out of the United States," Anthony said.

Thankfully, I've just recently started to actively avoid eggs in the

ingredients of what I eat. Previously, I didn't eat eggs as a meal,

e.g. scrambled, boiled, poached whatever, but didn't actively avoid

them as an ingredient in packaged foods like biscuits and such. I

also hate the fact that virtually every reasonably priced muesli bar

has dairy in it or is coated in chocolate or yoghurt, ick!

Keepin' it real in Sydney, Australia
