Kiwi fruit may prove dangerous for children

About 40 percent of children under five with an allergy had experienced life-threatening symptoms after eating the fruit.

London, Children could be susceptible to a serious allergic reaction that could be life-threatening after eating kiwi fruit, according to new British research published on Wednesday.

The Food Standards Agency, a statutory body, said a study carried out at the University of Southampton found that more children under the age of five were suffering severe symptoms including collapse, tingling and itching in the mouth and swelling of the tongue.

The research, which began in 2001, involved 30 children and adults with a confirmed allergy to kiwis who provided details about their first reaction to the fruit.

About 40 percent of children under five with an allergy had experienced life-threatening symptoms after eating the fruit. While two thirds of children suffered ill effects after their first taste of kiwi, only a fifth of adults had the same problem.

"The preliminary results of the research suggest that kiwi allergy could be more serious for children," an FSA spokesperson said.

Jane Lucas, who led the research, said: "Kiwi fruit is a really healthy fruit and so convenient and most children will not have any reaction at all. But like peanuts, I think it is something we all have to be cautious about."
