HI,

I am new also. I am trying to eat more vegetarian for health reasons..but

I do occasionally do the meat deal because I feel sick when I go to long

without some animal product like cheese or something. I wanted to

ask..how about rice milk? It isn't too bad really and my children love

it. It is vitamin fortified also.

Rice milk is lower in protein than soymilk. Just buy a different aseptic box of soymilk each week and see what you like. There are lots out there.

The reason you feel sick without animal products is that your vegetarian/vegan diet lacks sufficient protein. If you are relying on modern canned beans for protein, you will get sick. Look up heirloom beans on the internet and try them. They are higher in protein, lower in starch and calories than our modern beans. They are also quite pretty to look at.

If you are eating tofu, consider this: It takes three times the tofu to equal flesh protein. So, if you eat a 4 ounce flesh serving, you need a 12 ounce tofu serving. Yes, there are higher protein frozen meat analogs out there. Ever read the ingredients? I am not wild about the stuff in a tofu pup.

Protein is very easy to get, but you need to be aware it. You need about 25 to 30 grams of protein a day. I think the RDA says 45. I don't agree because it is a proven fact that the more protein you eat, the greater chances you have developing osteoporosis, no matter how much calcium you consume or supplement, NO MATTER HOW MUCH. Oddly enough, a lower protein diet, one with just enough, but not too much will give you stronger bones, a larger lean body mass percentage and longevity. It has been studied and a diet which represses calorie levels as low as possible will give you a longer life.

Now, remember the sources of vegan protein and start counting. Rice milk is very low in protein and high sugars, just part of being rice. Soymilk, depending on brand, can have a lot of sugars too, but a lot more protein. If you are having a widely varied diet and at least two, 8 ounce glasses of soymilk a day, you are well on your way.

Another pitfall of the vegan/vegetarian who is not well informed, is the consumption of large amounts of starches...flour products like bread and pasta, white rice, etc. These white products send your blood sugar soaring and FAST. Your body will send out more insulin to combat this and that will send your blood sugar spiraling down just as fast. You spend years slamming your pancreas this way and you will have diabetes. It is the white bread, white pasta, white potatoes and white rice so common in the American diet that have produced an epidemic of type 2 diabetes.

So, what do you do? There is lots of information, it conflicts. Some say soy is bad, too much is dangerous. Others like doctors will tell you that without meat, you will die, you NEED it. Well meaning friends and family will try to convince you are stupid to try to live without it. It takes reading to be informed for your own health and to refute these people who would try to change your mind.

I highly recommend "Laurel's Kitchen", especially the original version. They are proponents of whole grains...whole wheat, brown rice, whole ground corn, etc. (These grains will help to stabilize blood sugar and offer protein, fiber and nutrition.) This book goes into detail about eating, what amounts, about being well-balanced, about losing that flesh-eaters flesh, about how to feed children this way, how to feed a pregnant woman, getting enough protein, etc. It uses government studies and other studies to back up what they are saying. They also have wonderful bread recipes and recipes to tell you how to cook interesting things like kolrabi, boy choy and other oddities of the vegetable world.

You should probably also check out "Diet for a Small Planet". This is good information also. This will give you the information that convinced me. I am not really into animal rights and it isn't taht I don't care. My veganism comes from the belief that eating meat has lead to world wide malnutrition, has lead to the hole in the ozone layer and will pollute us all, including animals, out of existence. I read about this in "Diet".

I am NOT slamming you about eating animal products because you can do anything you like, we all can. I try to respect the rights of others to choose what they need and want for their own lives. Rather, if you want to commit to this more gentle way of life, you need more information so that you feel better, cleaner and more energetic. I am glad you posted about this problem, it is common amongst newcomers.

oohhh and visit vegweb.com and look up some interesting recipes, especially if you don't know how to make tofu taste wonderful.
