Out in WA, we pay $0.99 to 1.49# for organic beans from the bulk bin at the health food store or co-op. I'd look for a better price. ~Storm
Guest guest
Twenty-year-old beans might work, but the flavor would reflect the age. The best price for dried soybeans would be from a large co-op. Next best might be an Oriental market. Or buying from a bulk bin from a large supermarket. I've heard of people using soybeans from feed stores, but haven't done this--concerned about rodent byproducts (feces/urine) and cleanliness standards possibly not up to human food standards. Fresh beans give a fresh-tasting, less " beany " flavored tofu. I also use the recipe Dragonlady sent to the list, and have found it very reliable. Epson salts is magnesium sulfate; you can find it in the drugstore for not much money. Grace --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
Hi Grace--We don't have any way to buy bulk soybeans here in my town--we're driving out of town to shop at Ft Pierce tonight. I called a healthfood store there and asked if they have soybeans. They said its $1.95 per pound, but I'm going to perservere and ask them if they can order big huge sacks of soybeans and what would the cost to me be. There are no co ops that I'm aware of and no oriental markets either... To go to a really good chinese grocery we'd have to go to Tampa, about 5 hours drive from here. Wonder if I can order from a catalog --can't order online(no credit card or bank account). I could send a money order if I can find a source. Is $1.95 a pound a lot of money for soybeans?? You see, I have no clue how much its supposed to cost.
