It is a lot of work to make tofu.

Re: soybeans for tofu

Hi Grace--We don't have any way to buy bulk soybeans here in my town--we're

driving out of town to shop at Ft Pierce tonight. I called a healthfood

store there and asked if they have soybeans. They said its $1.95 per pound,

but I'm going to perservere and ask them if they can order big huge sacks of

soybeans and what would the cost to me be. There are no co ops that I'm

aware of and no oriental markets either... To go to a really good chinese

grocery we'd have to go to Tampa, about 5 hours drive from here.

Wonder if I can order from a catalog --can't order online(no credit card or

bank account). I could send a money order if I can find a source. Is $1.95 a

pound a lot of money for soybeans?? You see, I have no clue how much its

supposed to cost.

A lot of work? That recipe that Dragonfly posted looks perfectly fine to me. What, epsom salt and the soybeans?? It can't be any harder than making homemade soft cheese or homemade soap...I do both because it not only helps my family, but gives me an instant hobby. Does not look hard from this angle, besides she said she's done it for 20 years and just now has a soymilk machine....LOL!!! Guess it depends on how you look at it, and why you want to make your own anything. Don't know your name--not going to call you Elite..because we're all equal here aren't we? I'll use ALL of it for food.

hugs, Elaine

Guide my footsteps dear God, so I don't sin against you.

I can't believe what you all are having to pay for soybeans. I can get a

small quantity of beans like under 5#, for under a $1 a pound. I can get

50# of organic soybeans for under $30.

The best soybeans for milk are Laura soybeans and they are available on the

internet. If you have a machine, which I do, I can tell you that home made

soymilk that you enrich yourself costs about 75 cents a gallon, including

the price of water filtered at home to make it even better.

Shop around all you can for a better price. I live in Denver where we have

four health food store chains and things are less expensive, but even my

local Kroger sells soybeans in bulk.
