Does anyone have a good recipe for French Onion Dip (for eating with potatoe

chips) that doesn't involve a pre-made ingredient? All the recipes I am

finding call for Lipton's french onion soup dip or something else like that.

thanks!

For a good vegan beef-flavored bouillon you could try G. Washington brand. The

kosher section of the supermarket is also a possibility. You can use vegan

substitutes for sour cream or yogurt. Please keep in mind that the following

was written for omnivores and that you can make substitutes.

Dry Onion Soup Mix

Recipe By :Ellen

Serving Size : 0 Preparation Time :0:00

Categories : Condiment Mixes

Sauces & Gravies Soups & Stews

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method

-------- ------------ --------------------------------

7 ounces beef-style bouillon granules

1/4 cup instant unsweetened tea powder -- adds color and tang

without more salt

1/2 teaspoon pepper

1 1/2 cups dry minced onion

1/4 cup onion powder

1/4 cup parsley flakes

1/8 cup onion salt

2 tablespoons kal or red star nutritional yeast -- (2-4)

1 teaspoons ground celery seed -- (1-2)

1 tablespoon sugar -- (1-2)

Combine in order listed, mix very well but do not use blender. Keep the mixture

in an airtight container such as a zippered plastic baggie with the air pressed

out. Makes 2 cups (equivalent of 8 envelopes). 1/4 cup mix equals 1 envelope

commercial soup mix.

TO USE: Soup-1/4 cup mix to 4 cups boiling water. Stir well until powder is

dissolved. Onion dip- 4-5 tablespoon to 1 pint of sour cream or plain yogurt.

Variations These ingredients are optional but tasty: 1-2 tablespoons dried

mushroom powder or 1/4 cup chopped dried mushrooms Vegetable: Use vegetable

bouillon

NOTES : I wonder how much money Lipton's has made since they introduced this 50

years ago? Yours costs less than 1/3 of the brandname mix. This also makes a

great rub, and of course that traditional California onion dip.

The difficulty is that many call for dehydrated onion flakes, hence the soups.

To save time, I use organic onion soup mix from the health food store & vegan

sour cream substitute. I've never tried to make it from scratch & GIS didn't

turn up anything useful but I'll post one if I find one.

I make a miso onion soup that is similar to a french

onion soup.

I slice up about 3 onions lengthwise (so their long

and skinny) and saute them in olive oil until they are

well done and translucent. I flavor it with Tamari

soy sauce while it is sauteing. I add water and bring

it to a boil and then remove from the fire and let it

cool a few minutes. Then I add a few tablespoons of

barley miso and let it set again for about 10 minutes

before we eat it.

You can also top it with homemade croutons if you

wish. I take some whole wheat breat and spread a

little olive oil on it and then sprinkle with garlic

granules and sea salt, then broil for about 4 minutes.

I then dice the toasted bread and put it back in the

broiler for about another 2 minutes.

My family likes it.
