Guest guest
Im a sulfite sensitive asthmatic who loves wine but i don't get to drink it much . unfortunately the truth is that all wines contain some sulfites because it is a by product of fermentation . Organic wines generally contain significantly fewer sulfites ,many (but not all ) contain no 'added' sulfites . it is my understanding and personal experience , that the red wines are generally lower in sulfites .I simply cant drink whites at all .I like Frey organic wines ; they are low to mid priced good quality wines that i can drink when i am breathing well without much trouble but really you should be able to buy a vegan organic wine from a local liquor store or better yet go into a specialty wine shop and don't be shy about stating your budget ;tell them of your sensitivity and preferences and let them direct you .try a deep full bodied red grape wine (less sulfites ) I don't know how severe your sensitivity is, but here is a little method I find works well for me (ymmv) before trying any new wine i let someone else have a few sips of the wine and then sit near enough to smell their breathe ;if the wine on their breathe effects my breathing- I don't even try it LOL ( I NEVER drink wine if i feel inflamed at all or WHAM I have sudden ,MASSIVE ,nebulizer required attacks ) here are a few links that may be helpful http://www.ecowine.com/sulfites.html http://www.winenet.com/sulfites.htm http://www.freywine.com/freywine/ a friend shipped me wine from here for my 40th birthday and it was really good http://www.fitzpatrickwinery.com/ the prices are reasonable too with lots of choices in the 10-20 range . I think i may actually order from them . I hope this helps , and luk if you discover a terrific new vegan wine Teresa - Abegael Drake Monday, January 12, 2004 2:02 PM Re: ingredient questions Yah that is why I can't have wine. I know there is sulfite free wine but there is none at my local liquor store and I don't want to have to pay the expensive prices at a specialty store or mail order. Guest guest
Thanks for your reply, you confirmed what I suspected (that all wine contains sulfites to some degree due to naturally occuring sulfites, it is the same with cheese). I have an extremely acute sensitivity and can't touch any products that contain sulfites at all without a reaction which is why I generally don't take the chance and was looking for a substitute. Are you on the no sulfites ? Lots of nice knowledgeable people there thanks again! -Abbey =) > " outonalimb " <outonalimb > > >Re: ingredient questions- Sulfite 'free' vegan >wines >Mon, 12 Jan 2004 16:01:23 -0500 > >Im a sulfite sensitive asthmatic who loves wine but i don't get to >drink it much . > unfortunately the truth is that all wines contain some sulfites because >it is a by product of fermentation . Guest guest
yeah Abbey, it REALLY stinks doesn't it? ( ha ha I know you get the stupid pun) LOL I was on the Samters Triad list a few years ago when i developed that and got top notch inf. that saved me from surgery and almost eliminated my polyps YEAH :)I have never joined the sulfite group though maybe i should . Ive been sulfite sensitive my whole life ( used to have anaphylactic shock reactions to lots of the 70s preservatives , dyes and fruits and veggies back when they used to put that stuff on everything ! ) but find that since i eat organic fresh whole foods its much better. Since I'm a vegan i don't eat cheese anyway the only thing I miss is white wine VBG are your fruit and veggie choices restricted ? I'm thankful that i can eat a really diverse diet without reacting . teresa ----- Thanks for your reply, you confirmed what I suspected (that all wine contains sulfites to some degree due to naturally occuring sulfites, it is the same with cheese). Guest guest
Everything that has sulfites is out for me, that includes potatoes, corn, and grapes. Most other fruits and veggies seem to be okay. I also think I would be okay with organic potatoes, corn, and grapes and will be checking that in a while (after I get this cooking thing under wraps). I was sick and underweight for 22 years and despite many tests noone figured out what was wrong with me. Finally an allergenist recognized my symptoms and suggested msg and sulfite sensitivity. I tried for a year to cut out foods that were labelled as containing sulfites but still reacted and so now I am on a lifestyle change and completely cutting out all sulfite ingredients. Pectin is a hard one as I love yogurt and find a noticeable difference in my body's behavior when I go a week without it, it will probably be the last product I cut out. Basically though I am cutting out ALL commercially produced products except fruit juice (which does contain sulfites but I like juice too much) and the odd slice of pizza when my bf orders it. One hard thing has been corn ingredients as corn meal is an ingredient in a lot of recipes. I've learned so much this past month, I'm annoying the hell out of everyone I know because I'm always talking about hidden msg and sulfites in the foods they are eating lol -Abbey =) > " outonalimb " <outonalimb > > >Re: ingredient questions- Sulfite 'free' vegan >wines >Mon, 12 Jan 2004 16:39:49 -0500 > >yeah Abbey, it REALLY stinks doesn't it? Guest guest
Hi Shawna, this is a perfect example of "buyer beware " . unless they have discovered some new way to ferment wine, all wines contain sulfites . Some organic wines are very low in sulfites and contain "no added " sulfites but the term 'sulfite free wine ' is pretty much a misnomer . I can drink some organic red wines but not all and it sounds like Abbey is much more sensitive than i am . If you know of a wine vineyard that produces truly sulfite free wines please luk as there are millions like us who would buy it there are many sites on the internet that explain why all wines contain sulfites here is a link to 1 http://www.ecowine.com/sulfites.html hth's, Teresa ----- There are some wines at our local co-op labled "sulfite free"...:///
Guest guest
Also something to note is that FDA regulations only require labelling of products pertaining to sulfites if it is 10 parts per million or higher. So sulfite free (or preservative free) could mean less than 10ppm which is why in my case I have gone to a completely home made diet (or am on my way there anyway). For most people 10ppm won't affect you at all and is not conidered harmful. -Abbey > " outonalimb " <outonalimb > > >Re: ingredient questions- Sulfite 'free' vegan >wines >Tue, 13 Jan 2004 10:26:07 -0500 > >Hi Shawna, this is a perfect example of " buyer beware " . >unless they have discovered some new way to ferment wine, all wines contain >sulfites . Guest guest
Shoot, I forgot to look at the store last night..one of the wines I remember saying that sulfites had been removed...if I'm remembering correctly...I'll try to keep it in mind to check it when I go next... Guest guest
We lived in another country for a while where wine was unavailable so we made our own and we didn't add suffites. The suffites are probably preservatives so it'may not be a good idea to keep them too long. I need to get the recipe from dh and share it with you. In the meantime, here is a recipe I found on the net that turned out great! 2 - 12 oz. cans frozen grape juice (no preservatives) 4 cups sugar 1 pkg. dry yeast (if you don't have wine yeast, you can use baking yeast) Mix in gallon jug. Fill with water to just below neck.Stretch a large balloon over neck and use a rubber band to secure it. Store at room temperature for 6 to 8 weeks BettyShawna Marie Schwalenberg <shawnam wrote: Shoot, I forgot to look at the store last night..one of the wines Iremember saying that sulfites had been removed...if I'm rememberingcorrectly...I'll try to keep it in mind to check it when I go next...On Tue, 13 Jan 2004, outonalimb wrote:> Hi Shawna, this is a perfect example of "buyer beware " .> unless they have discovered some new way to ferment wine, all wines contain sulfites .
