Abbey,

Hello. I have been a lurker thus far, but what you

posted about cooking/preparing your own food in order

to eat healthier and feel better really struck a cord

with me. I have been a vegan for 7 years. My reasons

for becoming a vegan are only secondarily related to

health. Therefore, I have gone through periods where

I've eaten very poorly.

It appears that my health is beginning to suffer for

it. I have found recently that I have gained weight

and that I have very little energy. It has crept up on

me, really. Feeling this way has inspired me to start

cooking for myself everyday and packing food to take

with me to work. I know that I will feel so much

better than when I eat a lot of junk food/prepared

food.

Just curious (since breakfast is important for me)-

what kind of ingredients do you include in your

breakfast shake (if you don't mind me asking)?

Chris

blueberries

Wow! That's almost exactly the same as the shake I make. And I thought I invented it!! I also throw in a little cinnamon which really makes it taste even better!

hey there,

my morning shake consists of:

1 cup soy milk

1/2 cup apple juice

1 tbs oil blend (mix of flax, hemp, sunflower, borage, and pumpkin

oil)

one scoop protein powder

one banana

about 1/3 bag frozen fruit of some sort or another, usually

blueberries

blend well, a little trick at least with my last 2 blenders is to pulse it

about a dozen or so times at first then blend for like a min. if i don't

pulse it i end up with chunks of fruit still in it.

enjoy

peace

I actually have a weight gain shake that I got from a nutritional store, it

is 700 calories and that is only half a recommended serving! lol I am

working up to a full serving but 1L is really hard to drink first thing in

the morning :o)

For you though there is lots of stuff you can try. Soymilk with some

nutritional yeast and frozen fruit would make a fantastic shake. You can do

your own frozen fruit, just cut up some peaches or necatrines or oranges, or

whatever you like and toss them in the freezer. Watch out for the banana

though, it is very strong and you only need a little bit to add a whole lot

of taste. If you don't have any frozen fruit put in regular fruit and then a

couple of icecubes :o)

Also tofu works well, the really soft kind, blend it before adding the

soymilk and that way it will be smooth with no chunks. I recently took a

package of silken soft tofu and mixed it up with frozen strawberries and a

couple teaspoons of organic sugar and it made a great desert! A bit of

soymilk added in there would have turned it into a good shake.

If you're not a shake drinker though there is other homecooked type stuff

you can have for breakfast. Try getting some grains and making your own

granola type cereal or baking some breakfast muffins or there is always the

old stand by of toast with stuff on it. If you start making your own bread

though be careful if you're using a bread machine because a lot of

breadmachine recipes call for a lot of yeast and too much yeast isn't always

good for you. My aunt got a yeast infection on her elbow once after a love

affair with her new breadmaker lol

Speaking from experience when you are thinking about going home cooked it

seems really scary and like a lot of hard work but the more I cook for

myself the more premade food turns my stomach and I actually want to go home

and make something for me that I know won't feel heavy in my tummy and will

be good for me.

Hope that helped!

-Abbey =)

hey there,

because you need fat in your diet, and i find if i don't have fat i

crave fat, so i would much rather have a good dose of healthy fat in

the morning then resort to a bag of chips at night (witch happens

more often then i want). also i find it makes it more filling so to

speak, before i started using it i was hungry again i like an hour,

now i don't get hungry again for about 4 hours.

peace

The main part I know is to get plenty of Omega 3's , I use

organic flax seed oil.
