Guest guest
A good place to start about eating vegan may be the book " Mad Cowboy " by Howard Lyman. It's an easy read with a lot of good info and sources to look further into if you'd like. I would pay attention to the sections relating to protein and calcium. There are many myths on the two in mainstream society. Hyperalcia (I think is the name) is when you consume calcium from a food with a high protein content, this leads your body to leach more calcium out of your bones, etc. than you are taking in. Therefore, from my understanding, if you eat an animal based diet then you are actually setting youself up for depleted calcium levels and osteoporosis. Check into it. Good Luck and Welcome! Greg. Guest guest
My nutritionist actually told me that most vegetarians get way more protein than they need and that the whole " you don't get enough protein as a veggie " thing is a myth, but that we don't get as much calcium because vegetarians are really aware of the protein they consume but often forget about the calcium. She also confirmed what you just said, that if you get too much protein it takes away from your calcium. She told me that about 1.2-1.4g/kg of body weight is all that you need and when she did my nutritional analysis I was getter 2.2g/kg. She said it was okay but suggested I try lowering it because it would affect how I retain calcium. This was at a time in my life when I didn't watch the foods I ate and so as a vegetarian who was not label concious I was still getting this emense dose of protein. But that being said if you are really into athletics or strength train she said 1.7g/kg of body weight is good for you. Thanks for the book recommendation, I've never heard of it...I'll go check the local library and see if they've got it! ) > " gregburnett512 " <gregburnett512 > > > Hello Lyra >Mon, 26 Jan 2004 15:19:49 -0000 > >A good place to start about eating vegan may be the book " Mad >Cowboy " by Howard Lyman.
