Guest guest
There are many refined sugars that do not use bone char, but I can't remember where I saw that list of companies. I prefer turbinado for my iced tea and for cooking, but I don't sweat it if I see " sugar " in a list of ingredients. And it will likely be listed just as sugar. Whether to avoid it is up to you. From what I've read, some vegans avoid refined sugar, others don't. The cow bones are not part of the final product, though. Tue, 13 May 2003 17:25:23 -0700 (PDT) http://www.vegfamily.com/articles/sugar.htm I was reading this on one of the sites someone gave me here and I saw sugar can be prosessed with cow bone meal. Should a vegan avoid refind sugar then? How is refind sugar mentioned as an ingredient? Is it dextrose? The New Search - Faster. Easier. Guest guest
Could someone please clarify something for me - what is not vegan about sugar? I understand it has something to do with bone meal. (?) How about Sugar in the Raw? Evaporated cane juice? What is Sucanat? What is a practical substitute?? I'm trying to live a more vegan lifestyle. (An added bonus - if I can find something bad about sugar, maybe I'll be able to resist all the goodies at work . . .) Thanks!! Mary
Guest guest
Mary, I believe that only the common " granulated white sugar " on the grocery store shelves is filtered through animal bone charcoal. Somebody correct me on this if I am wrong. Quick, before I take another bite of my cornflakes... Some companies use bone char to filter their refined sugar and some do not. Look here for a list of those companies. http://www.vegfamily.com/articles/sugar.htm You've listed some very good sugar subistutes already. Turbinado sugar, or raw sugar, is usually the easist to use and is available from most health food shops. In the UK, none of the refined sugar companies use bone char so it's safe to assume that even the refined sugar is vegan. _________ BT Broadband - Free modem offer, sign up online today and save £80 http://bt..co.uk
