Guest guest
I have to have a powerful morning shake to really wake me up and fill my tummy each morning. But I do not want dairy and I can not have soy. I also don't like going through 1/2 L of ricemilk each day, it's expensive. And finally, I don't like buying protein powder because it's been giving me bad headaches. So I looked up nutrient info and have started making my own smoothie which is packed full of goodness!! I got a recipe for almond milk from vegweb.com and then added everything else. 1/2 cup slivered almonds (whole if you don't mind chunks of almonds in your shake, or ground if you have a grinder that will grind them) 2 cups water (or 1.5 cups water and several icecubes) 1 tbsp ground sesame seeds 1 tbsp ground flaxseed 1 tbsp nutritional yeast (or more - I just dump a bunch in) 1-2 cups of frozen or fresh fruit (I like equal amounts of frozen oranges and frozen bananas and a whole kiwi) 1 tsp vanilla sweetener of your choice Put the almonds into a blender with 1 cup water. Blend for several minutes until frothy and almonds are chopped small. Add remaining water and blend for several more minutes. Add vanilla, sesame, flaxseed, yeast, and fruit. Continue blending until mixed well, add sweetener to desired taste. Using 1 tbsp of sweetener and the above fruits this is what I calculated as the nutritional benefits of this mixture of ingredients (provided you don't strain the almonds out). The high calorie and fat is due mostly to the almonds (407 calories and 36g fat) so if you don't want that many calories for breakfast you can just cut the number of almonds in half and the taste would change very little.
