Guest guest
Hi Lindsay, Yeah, welcome to the world of vegan cheese. There's not much out there, and what is is not really suitable for eating by itself, IMHO. The only one I've found in the block o'cheese variety is the Vegan Rella mozarella flavor. I used it in my dinner tonight, actually. It's great for shredding into sauces, etc. to make things cheesey. BTW, it's tough to melt any vegan cheese if it's dry (i.e. on top of an oven-baked casserole) so if you're baking it, put some under the sauce, or whatever the more moist component is. The other vegan cheese I use sometimes is Vegan Singles. These are individually wrapped slices that are definitely not fit for consumption by themselves, but can hold their own on a cracker or sandwich with other more tasty items. Finally, there is Vegan grated parmesan alternative by Soymage. This is a great one for Italian cooking. You can get any of these at Whole Foods, BTW. I use this for vegan sausage & peppers, meatball grinders and the like. Go easy with this stuffa little goes a long way. Hope that helps! -Josh http://www.technotofu.com/ Lindsay wrote: > > > HI Everyone- > > I am seeking help from the vegans out there.. See Kim's review of a great vegan cheeze and how it yummily works when combined with cornmeal pizza crusts... http://www.generationv.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=16 Lindsay, what about returning the cheese to the store and encouraging them to stock a brand that doesn't have casein :-) Cheers, Tammy Get the veg vote out!! Guest guest
When I was in LA two years ago, Ralph's Markets sold Tofutti singles. They were the best vegan cheese ever. But the deal seems to be that Tofutti products were aimed at the Kosher Jewish market, and not particularly at the vegan or natural foods customers. When the flap over partially hydrogenated oils exploded, most health food stores discontinued most of the Tofutti line.. Personally I would risk the dangers to get some good cheese substitute. Rainbow sells the best available today - it's call something like Earth-Kind. Regards, Ron Richard Josh Miller <josh wrote: Hi Lindsay, Yeah, welcome to the world of vegan cheese. Guest guest
I couldn't agree more about the Tofutti cheese slices! I just recently discovered them at New Leaf market in Santa Cruz and i am totally addicted to them. I just had the best piece of " cheese " pizza with them. Mmmmm... so worth the hydrogenated oils! - Carla Brauer www.freedom4animals.org On Monday, November 24, 2003, at 09:31 PM, Ronald Richard wrote: > When I was in LA two years ago, Ralph's Markets sold Tofutti singles. > They were the best vegan cheese ever. Guest guest
Can anyone suggest a vegan cheese that actually tastes good? The vegan cheeses I have tried are all , well, YUCK! I have had some tofu cream cheese, I think its called 'better than cream cheese' and while it was ok, it tasted oddly sweet, not like the real thing. Also, what are the best tasting vegan burgers and meat substitutes? I would love to get everyone's input on this, thanks! Guest guest
The brand Tofutti makes descent vegan cheese slices. The only kind I've tried is the American variety, although there is also Mozzerella too. Tofutti also makes the "Better than cream cheese" and "Sour Supreme" products, also both very good in my opinion. If the store you shop at has the cream cheese, maybe they also have the cheese slices or, if not, maybe they can get them for you. ~zach - clamosse Sunday, December 19, 2004 8:08 PM Vegan cheese Can anyone suggest a vegan cheese that actually tastes good? Guest guest
I haven't tried any vegan cheeses that I like. A few vegetarian soy-based cheeses aren't quite as bad and are passable, but are not vegan (they contain casein). As far as vegan meat substitutes, the Boca and Morningstar Farms burger crumbles are good. Gimme Lean veg. ground " beef " is fat-free but are gooey in my opinion. I LOVE Lightlife's smoky tempeh strips (aka Fakin' Bacon) on BLTs, crumbled on salads, or with breakfast. I like Boca vegan burgers quite a bit. Sausage wise, Gimme Lean is ok but it seems to need a good amount of oil to fry in to give it a good, crisp texture. It can be a bit messy too, as it comes in a tube. I'm interested in hearing what others in the group have to say and maybe get inspired to try some new products. Best wishes! Guest guest
Sure, perhaps if the writer would tell us where she's from vegans in that region could help her out as far as specific products. But for those of us in the U.S. the products I listed are good. And I'll try the Tofutti slices--didn't know they were vegan! Guest guest
Best way to find a vegan cheese you like is to make your own. A great book is the 'Uncheese Cookbook' http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1570671516/qid=1103548095/sr=8-1/r\ ef=pd_csp_1/002-0610136-7276031?v=glance & s=books & n=507846 --- clamosse <clamosse wrote: > > Can anyone suggest a vegan cheese that actually > tastes good? Guest guest
I can't comment on the meat substitutes, but in the place of ground meat, I simply use brown rice in an equivalent amount. - Mary Boehler Sunday, December 19, 2004 9:36 PM Re: Vegan cheese I haven't tried any vegan cheeses that I like. Just thought I would point out that a lot of people cannot get all these items you are talking about !!
