Guest guest
Have you tried getting them involved with the food preparation? Making bread from scratch is really easy and fun for kids. Although at 16 they may be to cool for kneading dough. Basically its just a couple cups of floor and a cup of 3/4 warm water with two tbls of raw sugar dissolved, a teaspoon of yeast and a dash of salt. The war water warms the yeast (from the fridge) and dissolves the raw granulated sugar easier. I like to use half spelt floor and half white. The dough needs to be just wet enough so it wants to stick to your fingers but can't. Ad a little extra water or floor until done. Then let it rise, beat it down, put into pan or loaf shape for baking, let rise again 30 min to an hour or longer and bake at 375. I love to make my own bread by hand, gives me something to do in long winters here on the cape. Also you can put the dough in a oiled & dusted with corn meal cast iron skillet and instead of baking heat on very low flame for 20 to 30 minutes. Its called seamans bread and great for chillies and soups. You're kids remind me of the young man at Wendy's who told me that, " you can't live without meat. " I was ordering a veggie burger and he thought you would die if you didn't eat animals. I probably gave him my pat answer, " I used to believe that too, but it turns out it's a lie. " I grew up hunting and trapping and even raised rabbits when I was little. We killed and eat the rabbits. I of course was dumb and had named them. Rabbits are hard to kill (at least by pre-teens) and squeal a lot. You may want to buy your children live things like rabbits, they can be house broken and litter trained. Next time they want meat just tell them to go and get fluffy. I don't think its cruel, because that's exactly where meat comes from. People spend more time choising what outfit they will wear than they do on their dietary choices and the consequenses to the life of the animal. Matthew Mail - now with 250MB free storage.
