Guest guest
Oh I had such high hopes for Tuno! I never even got to taste it. The smell assaulted me when I opened it, but what really got me was the gel gunk on it, ya know...like the gooey stuff on SPAM!?!? yikes! it didn't even make it out of the can. But this was about 4 years ago, so maybe it's changed? I've seen a few faux-tuna recipes lately. Here's one from http://randomgirl.com/recipes.html (check her out for more great vegan recipes!) I haven't tried this one yet (can't find kelp anywhere near me), so if anyone tries it, let us know how it is! (I personally don't like celery or carrot in mine...) Tuna Salad Tastes so much like real tuna fish, it's scary! 1 pound frozen firm tofu, thawed 1 rib celery, chopped 2 tbls grated carrot 2 tbls soy sauce 1/2 cup Tofu Mayonaise or other egg-free mayo 1 tbls lemon juice 1/2 tsp kelp or kombu powder (optional, but this is what makes it fishy) Squeeze the excess moisture out of the thawed tofu, and crumble it into small pieces. Combine with the bell pepper and carrot. Stir in the rest of the ingredients and mix well. * If you want to make an extra special tuna salad, mix in these things as well..... 1/2 cup roasted red peppers and kalamata olives cut into strips. Yum!
Guest guest
I wonder if dulse would work instead of kelp? Guest guest
Hmmm, interesting about the bad experiences with Tuno!! I happen to quite like it as tuna salad, but I agree that straight out of the can isn't very tasty (but I still don't find it offensive). I know what you mean about the gel on the top, lol! A vegan friend of mine made a tuna/noodle casserole with it and it was just awesome. Maybe it works better in recipes, or maybe it just isn't for everyone. Guest guest
I wonder if you could order dulse or kelp by mail order. I know dulse is dry. Or it might just be too much fuss.
