Thanks Gayle. Many people, vegan and otherwise, assume a certain religious or

political agenda to one's dietary preferences which isn't always the case.

Reminds me of a long-ago spit-fest on Vegan-L when someone decided tobacco and

(of all things) tomatoes were not vegan! Go figure — even vegans were squabbling

about the definition. Anyway it's helpful to understand the different paths and

aspects to veganism, so I appreciate the clarification your link provided.

Oh dear, I may have to send this out as a monthly scheduled message ;)

Once again, one does not have to be vegetarian or vegan to to this

list. Short of checking out everyone's pantry, I have no way of knowing what

diets individual list dwellers follow, nor is it any of my business. The only

stipulation is that posted recipes be vegan, and that the general discussion

revolves around food and recipes. Some digression is fine, as it helps us get

to know one another, but threads involving ethics are better taken off-list or

left to forums dedicated to such issues.

Well put,

It's hard being vegetarian/vegan and not getting drawn into arguments.

Even with your own family over what is and what isn't acceptible.

When it all comes down to it, it's a personal decision.

I try to be more vegan if possible, simply and mostly because I do it

for environmental reasons. My reasoning not to make myself

ill. It has improved my health for me.

But everyone's choice, is their choice and shouldn't have to be drawn

into lenghthy discussions unless wanted too, and should be off the list.

I'm scratching my head on that one... mind you, I know

someone who ordered a vegetarian salad, and, when she

found it contained bacon, tried to return it, only to

be told by the staff that " bacon is not a meat, " so

who knows what people are thinking when it comes to

food.

Unless it was fake bacon. But I would need to see the bottle before accepting the salad. ;)

Maybe it was fake bacon, like simulated bacon.

I doubt it, and the way the story was told, the woman

who waited on my friend insisted that bacon IN

GENERAL, not that specific bacon, is not a meat.

I always laugh when I'm trying to find something on a menu and the wait

staff seems upset that I'm taking so long, then my hubby says I'm a vegan

and the wait staffs says " well, we have several fish dishes. " After I laugh

I always ask them what kind of plant the fish grew on. Most of them don't

get it.
