Earth Balance

Although I usually use olive oil to cook with, the few times I've used Earth

Balance it seemed just like butter.

Don't have Trader Joe's here : (

Also, Tofutti Sour Supreme is a great sour cream sub. (doesn't taste so good

on its' own, but what sour cream does?!)

Now, if they could only come up with a good mayo and/or cheese substitute!

There are several commercially available mayo subs I have tried. None are

bad. Cheese? Most cheese subs are VILE, or have casein in them (not vegan).

Tofutti brand isn't bad for making grilled cheese sandwiches or pizza, or

similar

items (I've tried the cheddar and mozzarella flavors). Don't eat them plain,

though! Not as good. The Uncheese Cookbook, and the Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook

by Joanne Stepaniak are two excellent sources of cheese subs, as is the

Newstart cookbook, and any by Dr. John McDougall, the Benton sisters, and

several

other vegan authors. Cheese subs are EVERYWHERE! :)

Louise,

I can buy Earth Balance at Kash 'n Karry and Publix as well as my local HFS. I don't know if you have those grocery stores where you are but it might be worth asking your local stores if they can carry it since it is carried by some.

God's Peace,

Gayle

It's essentially pure added non-food fat, with essentially no nutritional value.

About 11 grams of fat per tablespoon. It'll help you achieve heart disease just

as effectively as ghee (at 12 grams of fat per tablespoon).

That people believe it is nutritious and " essential " in Indian cooking doesn't

take into account the facts: it's added fat, fuels development of plaque (which

leads to strokes), and isn't needed to still make tasty Indian Food. The only

real value to ghee was that when you don't have much refrigeration available,

clarifying butter will enable it to keep longer.

I remember when living in Texas the problems that the Indian community in Dallas

was having with heart disease and obesity from using so much ghee in cooking (as

well as frying).

FYI, Mark

>You can substitute Earth Balance margarine for the ghee. Ghee is a dairy

product, technically.

For the record, I was NOT endorsing the use of Earth Balance. I was just suggesting a vegan alternative to ghee, should one feel the need to use one. :) Marilyn
