Guest guest
(My first post here...) Can anyone recommend a tasty high-calorie, high-protein drink for weight gain? I'm looking for something like Ensure but without the milk proteins. The person who needs it is an adolescent on medication that reduces appetite. He is also severely milk-allergic. He is rarely hungry, and his weight is suffering, so anything that can shove more calories into what little he eats will help. He's just at the start of what should be a growth spurt and desperately needs to get more calories. I've found a few products online (typically powders to be mixed into water) but I don't want to spend $15 on a canister and find out it tastes awful. I need something he'll be willing and eager to drink. Complicating matters: His other allergies are food dyes and chocolate, so anything with colors or cocoa/chocolate flavoring is out. Vanilla is usually a safe bet for flavor. Soy is fine. Thanks for any help you can offer! --Robin
Guest guest
You might try a McKesson product called Lipisorb. The powder is not good tasting, but the canned product is pretty good (vanilla flavor) and easy for kids since there is no mixing. It's a high calorie nutrition product made by Mead Johnson. You can check it out at www.meadjohnson.bms.co.th/external/Lipisorb.htm. I used this product for several years with my elderly mother who had severe milk allergies and great difficulty maintaining weight. Definately drink it cold - it helps the flavor a lot. Many nutritionists, people with experience with AIDS or hospice patients and some doctors have experience with this product, you may want to consult with one of them . . . I believe that 3 small (8 oz) cans is a full day's caloric intake. It can be a bit hard to find - I was able to special order it by the can or by the case through Walgreens as well as directly from Mead Johnson - whose staff was incredibly helpful in answering my questions. You may want to verify the absence of milk protein directly with them (Mead Johnson). I think they had the lowest price as well. One note on receiving the product directly through the mail - I had trouble with cans which were bent in the shipping process, probably compromising the contents but in each instance Mead Johnson promptly replaced the cans with no hassle. Hope this helps.
Guest guest
I personally prefer adding a protein supplement, like hemp or soy protein, to a fruit smoothie. sandisyp wrote: You might try a McKesson product called Lipisorb...
