LaDonna,

So what is your recipe for this burger using the TVP? I have heaps of that in

my pantry. I buy it in bulk as well. I use it mainly for Bolognaise sauce

making.

Hi Barbara,

I'm not Jo. . .but can tell you what I use as a vegan and gluten free

burger. I purchase the bulk soy textured vegetable protein from the health food

store and use it as burger. It even comes in flavors such as beef, chicken, and

so on. It works quite well and is tasty too.

oh, that sounds kind of what I'm having for lunch. LaDonna - we made the walnut

sauce for spaghetti last night and I added some tomato soup (closest thing to

what you call tomato sauce...) and it was lovely, just like you said. And this

morning there is enough left over for me to have for lunch. The sauce has

thickened a little, but I was planning on having it on some bread! It's a kind

of tomato based like you said - I'll call it me sloppy joe now!

Thanks,

-

LOL! It's a sweetish tomato-saucey crumbled/ground " meat " sandwich filling.

Extremely American. Sometimes you eat it open face, because it's so messy.

I think the gf brand I buy is Sunshine, but I don't have any boxes left

right now. I'll def. be using TVP, if it's gf.

Well, LaDonna - I have to report about my " sloppy joes " that I had for lunch

today. I took the rest of the walnut sauce to work and had that with some bread

- it was really lovely. So now I know what a sloppy joe is, I'll have to show

the family one night!

Barbara, why don't you try what I had for sloppy joes today? I only think and

imagine that it is like what you call a sloppy joe, because I live in Australia

and hadn't ever heard of a sloppy joe till I joined this group!

Anyway, here is how I made the sauce:

Chop 1 onion and saute in a little oil till soft. Add a large can of chopped

tomatoes (can use fresh ones if you like..), and simmer. Add the herbs you want

for flavouring, I added basil, garlic powder and oregano. Add about 1 cup of

walnuts roughly chopped (I put them in the blender for a second or two) and mix

well. LaDonna added some of what you call tomato sauce to hers, and this time I

also added about 1/2 cup tomato soup, which is the closest thing I could find to

what you call tomato sauce. (In Australia we call ketchup tomato sauce..) I

used this to put over the bread/bun to make the sloppy joe. The walnuts have a

lovely chewy consistency and a good flavour, although the walnuts do alter the

colour a little. But it was delicious... I hope you enjoy..

I am not Jo either, but I can get TVP (texture vegetable protein) at my

local grocery store. The only have plain or smoke flavoured. There is also

Yves which is prepared, kept in the refrigerated section near the produce

and which looks like hamburger.

If you're lazy or just plain too busy to whip something up, you can

try the Sunshine burgers in the frozen food section of most health

food stores. There kind of pricy, but very yummy on a rice bun.

Sometimes you gotta just heat and eat. :)

Dice and roast a bunch of root veggies (beets, parsnips, carrots,

onions, etc), then sauce them up with the sauce. It's tasty. I

often roast tons of root veggies, then freeze in various size

portions. Some I add to soups, most I eat as they are, some get

dressed up for salads and sandwiches.

Hey Barbara:

The Sunshine burgers are vegan and soy free. They taste wonderful and

come in a couple of flavors. I have the Southwestern style in my

freezer and I love them. :) The plain burger might be best for your

son if the other flavors are too spicy for him.

Julie,

Now this sounds yummy to me! Only problem my son can not have walnuts right

now. He can have peanuts wonder if that would work? Walnuts sound much better

though!

Barbara, I would imagine that any nuts would work ok. Can he eat pecans? They

are similar. I used walnuts because I like the texture and taste when they are

cooked. You could try peanuts or brazil or even pine nuts. It truly was

delicous - I was quite taken with my first taste of this delight! I was

surprised at how sweet the flavour was.

Ah....he loves pine nuts and can eat them. That sounds better to me than

peanuts. I have been cautious about peacans because they are a lot like walnuts

and so I haven't tried him on them.

Thanks, The link doesn't work, but I can see below it that it was in the

crockpot catagory and since someone mentioned the lentiles, I guess it is the

sloppy lentile joes.

If I hadn't made lentile soup last night I would make this tonight, but it

will have to wait a few days. Thanks again.
