Guest guest
Edith, I think if you knew the facts about the lady in Ireland you will probably find that the story is more British propaganda,If you seriously believe that a women would be sent to prison for twelve years after wanting a abortion, after being raped, your seriously mislewd I've nothing against british or any body per say, but the history of british imperialism stinks like most societies, Britain still, like other demon societies revel in war and domination and slaughter,So please don't use a lie to blame those who are trying to stop abortion from being as exceptable as war and killing,I wonder would you encourage your son or best friend to go to war to kill or be killed? Guest guest
Hi Simon, I like your edenic ideal even if Edith thinks it's nuts. I guess evolution does not fit in with your religious beliefs, but I like to believe that eventually enough herbivores will fight back effectively enough so that carnivores will have to evolve to eat some plants or else die out, or alternatively as hunting gets more difficult as herbivores get smarter and stronger, the carnivores will move over to eating only animals that have died naturally. No-one would stop them scavenging, and this has an important purpose in nature as everything dies eventually and the dead bodies have to be recycled back into the land. Does the earth and nature need carnivores, other than scavengers? I see no reason why the hunters carnivores are all that necessary a part of nature so long as there are both scavenger-type carnivores and plant eaters. I don't even mind when people who insult me call me Lesley Vulture, I don't even consider it a serious insult, as I much prefer scavengers to hunters, if animals have to eat meat to live, because it's their biology that dictates this, much better that they scavenge, so I like Vultures although they look ugly! I'd rather be a vulture than a killer, although quite happy as a vegan. Look how many cattle have horns, and have you seen the nature programmes where they fight back against the big cats? I always cheer on the buffalo/antelopes, etc! I would think that we could only return to your edenic ideal through the process of evolution, as true carnivores such as lions will not be able to thrive on plant foods yet in a natural setting, although they might be OK with vegan food with lots of veggiecat, but that is calling for an unrealistic amount of human intervention. They would not be able to get the taurine naturally. The sharks you talk of must have been trained and manipulated by humans, I don't think we can trust them to stay that way. So would you morally support genetic engineering to bring about the edenic ideal where no animals kill each other and they all eat plants, or do you have faith that god will make it happen? I'm not sure I have faith that it will happen naturally, I just would like it to, and I believe it is a long way off after many millennia of evolution so all life on Earth will look quite different by then. I'm just wondering how far it would be acceptable for humans to go in manipulating nature to bring about an end to creatures killing one another for food, but I think we have to work on the humans first anyway. These ideas about making animals all herbivores will never be taken seriously until most humans are vegan or at least vegetarian, and committed to making the whole world kinder. Just asking out of interest, are there any SciFi books anyone knows that deal with this issue? Guest guest
I think a bit of cynicism's healthy. You're way over the top on universal compassion, but I gotta admit that the world needs more optimism. > Does the earth and nature need carnivores, other than scavengers? To prevent overpopulation, perhaps? These ideas about making animals all herbivores will never be > taken seriously until most humans are vegan or at least vegetarian, and > committed to making the whole world kinder. It would really mess up the planet if humans started interfering with carnivores. Your ideology is extremely hopeful, but nature definately has an evil streak. Look closely at the insect world: female spiders eating their mates after sex, flies laying their eggs inside caterpillar cuckoons which then eat the foetus from inside in order to grow; spiders trapping flies; there's loads of horrific examples. Even some plants compete to survive. Gazelles would become fat, lazy and bloated like Elvis Presley if they didn't have to run away from the lion; when could you cheer on the herbivore that fights off the predator and gets away with it? Its different for humans, because we have choice, culture, advanced communication and the potential to dominate, even destroy the planet with our tools and machines; I believe its our duty, responsability to be compassionate and respectful to our planet, although this doesn't mean it should be a burden. And we should definately let nature get on with it. Animal herbivores have problems, so do we. And what would life be like if there were no problems? Surely flat and boring? I saw a nature program a while back that covered gazelles, and the scientist/narrator reckoned the gazelles ponse around the lions to show off, or provoke them, a bit like flirting with death. Humans do it with things like snowboarding, why not gazelles? I don't think humans should intervene with nature in any way, at least not on a large scale. If humans start helping herbivores escape predators in an organised way and make it easier for them to survive, then over time they would evolve to not be survivors and would eventually depend on humans for survival or become extinct. The only proper action that should be taken regarding nature is preventing other humans in messing up nature and the ecosystems. (I have repeated words lots, sorry for the unexciting language) Jules
Guest guest
Good point I'll remember not to swerve when I see a kid about to cross the road . I won't help the old lady who has fallen over or the aquaintance choking on a piece of food.. Guest guest
Oh sorry. I'm surrounded by meat eating thoughtless competing people most of my waking hours, perhaps they've rubbed off on me, sorry for my realistic cynicism, I'm not used to compassion and optimism. And I'm far too used to sarcasm. Go save a gazelle. , " Angie Wright " <angiewright@n...> wrote: > Good point I'll remember not to swerve when I see a kid about to cross the road .
