But would we live near enough of those crops (tree crops, etc.) to make our lives viable? What about the URBAN configuration (the institution of the city in modern days)?

PanDeva wrote: There are probably enough foods that fall from vines, bushes, and trees to make up a complete diet for humans, especially if you factor in all of the known and unknown rainforest fruits, nuts, and berries which are not commonly eaten in our society. The plant obviously makes these things to carry seeds forth for reproduction, but also to attract the animals (birds, primates, and others) who would eat these things and drop the seeds (literally or in other ways) some distance from the parent plant to spread the species. How anyone could feel bad about eating these things I couldn't begin to imagine. True, aside from the fleshy fruits the nuts and seeds are the "seeds," but the plant overproduces them and therefore doesn't need all of them to survive as new embryonic plants, plus the intricate web tying animals and plants together doesn't seem to suggest that these edibles--once again--WEREN'T evolved in harmony with their animal "consumers-dispersers-protectors."Not that I'm "into" any religion, but for you fans of Genesis 1:29 out there, you COULD interpret the original diet as what I've just described. "Herb-bearing seeds" are seeds and nuts, and "every fruit containing a tree-yielding seed" is self-explanatory.Someone should make a list--if one doesn't already exist--of free-falling edibles (from bushes, vines, and trees) that do NOT necessitate the taking of the life of the parent plant. Cite the nutritional content, and come up with a viable "fruitarian" diet that is more reliant upon orcharding than agriculture.Less plants killed (all agricultural annuals are killed for the food), more edible biomass produced per acre, more animal variety in forests than in bean and grain fields, more oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange between atmosphere and trees versus atmosphere and plants (thus less greenhouse gases accumulating), more topsoil buildup and stabilization due to deeper tree roots (than annual cops' roots), less desertification of Earth surfaces if trees are grown where annuals are now grown (especially in shallow soils or on hilly ground), less technology (annuals need to be planted and harvested each year, unlike fruit and nut trees), and with less technology less oil needed for lubricating and propelling farm machines, less work and therefore less need for larger populations, less work means more leisure and more creativity, less disease (annuals often require firing/cooking, which reduces nutrients and sets one up for deficiency diseases), etc., etc.I don't know why we are talking about plant sentience when the Earth's only superpower has been commandeered by a fanatical regime of oil families via a bloodless coup during the 2000 elections in the winner's brother's state, and that this regime that has taken America over has toppled decades'-old treaties protecting humans (not to mention animals and plants) from nuclear bombs, runaway atmospheric pollutants, and rights'-supplanting shadow governmental agencies. Instead (or at least in addition to) all of this time-wasting musing on what we ought and ought not eat, Americans and all other peoples need to rise up and crush these fascists who are planning to control everything on Earth, sentient plants and all.Get a placard, write something sane on it, and get out on the street with other people. The movement has to start now, or we're all dead ducks. People during the early '60's bought into government lies about Vietnam and look where they took us. Bush has plans to start building (and that also means TESTING--as in Iraq or somewhere else) small nuclear bombs ("bunker busters") and engaging "terrorist" nations on a "first-strike" (not a defensive strike) basis. He has a short list of 7 countries that he would use these on, INCLUDING Russia and China. Those 2 countries combined have 1 person out of every 3 on the planet. If you think that Russia and China aren't PLANNING defensive weapons (more nukes) to protect themselves from that moron from Texas and his fascist compadres, then think again.Sentient plants? We should be so lucky as to have one sitting in the Oval Office!Ted PanDeva Zagar
