Guest guest
I have a funny story -- well, funny to me and to the NAVS Directors who were part of it. when I first had become a vegetarian while in the Harvard Divinity School, I managed quickly to discover BOTH Vegetarian Times (www.Vegetariantimes.com) AND the North American Vegetarian Society (www.NAVS-Online.org). When I registered for the North American Vegetarian Society summer conference and joined the organization in the same form, I was asked (on their membership form) what kind of vegetarian considered myself. One of the options was " vegan " (eats no animal ingredients and wears no animal items or uses any products which purposefully caused animal suffering. I checked another item and wrote back an explanatory, apologetic note (about the item which had made me think), saying (something like): (that) I am trying to eliminate all these items, and I would never again buy leather shoes or animal products, but I had an old pair of (Clark's) leather shooes which had been broken in and which felt like a friend, and which I didn' wan tto throw away. When Brian and Sharon Graff met me at that year's summer conference, Brian remembered me as the NAVS member with the pair of old shoes that felt like a friend (rather than the other way around). As a matter of fact, though I'm nearly a 25-year vegan, I didn't discard those old shoes until 2 years ago, when my home of 20 years burned (and I moved to another city). Maynard S. I think it really depends on whether you feel comfortable wearing them. The damage has already been done to the animals, so it won't make any difference in that respect whether you carry on wearing them or not. I suppose one bad thing about wearing animal-derived clothes as a vegan is that if non-vegans see you wearing them, they may think you don't have a problem with such clothes and perhaps buy more for you in future. Guest guest
From a personal standpoint, I just can't bear to see the wool, leather, silk (et al, ad nauseum) on my body. I feel too guilty. xxk@xx Joel Cartwright [joel]29 March 2002 03:26 Subject: Re: Non-vegan possesions - what do you do with them?On Fri Mar 29, 2002, geouze wrote:> > I have a really comfy pair of leather boots which i gave up > wearing... should I wear them...(I'll try to make the decision up > for my self) I'm wearing a woolly hat at the moment (I'm not sure if > its wool or not, certainly feels lke it) to cover my recently shaved > head... it was my birthday not long ago...I think it really depends on whether you feel comfortable wearingthem.
