Until the last couple of years or so, certified organic seed (that is seed that could be guaranteed to have originated from parent plants that had been raised organically) has been very hard to come by, ceratinly that has been the case for the home growers market, and I believe that it was also the case for commercial growers. This is however beginning to change- HDRA/Chase now do quite a bit of stuff that is organic in their home gardeners catalogue, as do Tamar & I suspect Kings (esp as nearly all the home market seed originates from Kings anyway!). However, raising and growing organic plants from seed that might not be of organic origin has never been much of a problem AFAIK, but this is a different proposition from raising plants from seed that has been chemically treated and dressed with artificial fungicides, etc... however I didn't see MT's program so am not quite sure what the charges are that he levelled against them... I do know, as I pointed out before, that there are quite a number of people who question the validity of Soil association accreditation, not least as Mark Fisher pointed out, that they seem to be rigidly wedded to specific but not always appropriate agricultural systems & dogma. Guest guest
Graham -- Innumerable mercis to you for your detailed responses to my queries. I am going to do plenty research on VON, because that's so obviously the best way. Someone from work recorded the MT prog, so I could try to make a copy for you if you like. Lemme know. Thanks so much, again. I can't tell you how appreciative I am! )) xk@x quercusrobur2002 [grahamburnett]01 April 2002 23:13 Subject: Soil association/Mark Thomas Re: Slightly OT for Graham...Until the last couple of years or so, certified organic seed (that is seed that could be guaranteed to have originated from parent plants that had been raised organically) has been very hard to come by, ceratinly that has been the case for the home growers market, and I believe that it was also the case for commercial growers.
