i jumped in ... at college i knew someone who was in and out of mental

hospitals for 15 years... my girlfriend has been in .. and she is now doing

an MA in Science Society and Medicine... with her main interest being mental

health ... she accuses me of being loose with my terms when i talk about

this area .... but i think that happens anyway when someone not familiar

with something starts talking about it with someone who has lots of

experience of it... and after some thought i can usually express my ideas

more eloquently... (if i feel it necessary)...

 

(personal) reality... my guess is it's the 'what is going on around you' ...

and we spend a lot of time escaping from it ... whether by smoking .. doing

drugs... going to the cinema... reading a book ... repeating words... going

to church...

 

loosely defined is the proportion of how much we escape to how much we

interact with the world around us ... on a loose scale that might determine

whether we should be locked up or let loose... i guess that depends on the

psychiatrist...

 

but it appears to me to be all about whether we are fit to live in society

and keeping us out if we are deemed not fit... and not about showing us

what we are escaping from ... and showing us how to cope with that...

understanding our own minds...

 

there has been too much focus on exploring the external world (projected to

its extreme of astronautics)... and not enough on the internal world

(psychonautics)...

 

what is needed is a creative solution within our education system ... to

address mental functioning... as well as emotional functioning...
