Answering for me, I probably did become vegan partly because of my

background. My mother kept a goat and she used to make her have a kid evedry

year or so so she would keep producing milk, but my mum always had the male

baby goats killed! I was very distressed by this, even though my mum assured

me they were just put to sleep and didn't feel pain, I still felt strongly

that they had the right to life, so I was aware from an early age of the

link between dairy products and exploitation and killing. My mum also bred

some turkeys for Christmas one year and I was really upset by that too.

She was not a farmer she just dabbled in animal keeping, but it was enough

for me to know I would be strictly vegetarian some day. She had free range

chickens for eggs and they were treated well so I didn't see a problem with

that for a long time. I know free range farmers kill the males though.

For Ian.

Ian, do you think you became vegan because you had a farming background, or

in spite of it.

Love /Shell.

My grandparents were farmers and my first home was the farm. I used to see

chicken's being killed and their feathers being plucked out. I also visited

a battery farm once which was in a neighbouring farm. I was quite young and

I didn't know what it was until I went inside. It was so loud. The

chickens were in terribly cramped conditions. I'm not sure if this led me

to becoming a vegan, but I do believe that it planted the seed.

The other thing was watching the news once when I was young and they showed

a turkey farm. Someone in the room looked at me and said " the turkey you

are going to eat on Christmas Day is still running around " and I burst into

tears. Its then that I made the connection and I became vegetarian shortly

afterwards.

Love, Janey

Hi Lesley,

I enjoyed your post, I always wondered how it would feel to have lived

somewhere where animals were kept. I had a friend who lived on a farm and

once she took me to see the piglets. There was a little corridor down the

middle and each side a small pen, absolutly crowded with piglets, so small

that some had their feet up on others. At the end of the passage were two

piglets lying on the floor, one dead and one still moving a little bit. She

explained that these had been trampled on and had been fished out to dye on

the floor. Although I was only about ten and a big meat eater, this immage

stayed with me for the rest of my life and was one of the major influences

that made me vegetarian later on.

Love Shell.

Sorry, I was praising Janey for going from a farming bg to a Vegan

lifestyle, not claiming credit for same. I was brought up as a suburban

omni.

I should have thought it would be more likely that a young person would go

vegan having seen the animals being raised and know they end up on the

dinner plate, I think it's even more admirable when born and bred town folk

make the connection between the animals and their dinner if they never see

the live animals much.
