I think I'll have to make an appearance! It will be very nice not to

feel the odd one out & meet loads of vegans! I'll definitely bring

lots of money - I have to when I go to Holland & Barratt as I could

buy so much there. I can't imagine what I'll be like when it's ALL

vegan!!

Could I ask anyone who knows why a supposedly national event is being

held in London rather than somewhere central? Far too many " national "

events are held in a place that is awkward to get to for most of the

population!

Well, firstly this year's event is not called the *National* Vegan

Festival - its " The Vegan Festival " (I know the website is out of

date!).

Why London? Well it is our capital city - you have to admit there are

pretty good transport links to London. Some people come from overseas

to the festival, so if they can make it... Also the people who

organise the event live there - in case you didn't know the whole

festival is organised by two individuals, and for the very first

event they had to beg and borrow money from people to get it going

(in fact they probably still do). If there is a demand for another

festival in another part of the country, there is nothing stopping

anyone else doing the same.

Cheers,

Rob

Sorry, I was assuming that the original header in this thread was

correct.

>Why London? Well it is our capital city

Indeed. That seems to be enough to justify almost anything, to people

in the south-east at least. So many things have been justified solely

on that basis, rather than what's fair, sensible and/or financially

justifiable, in recent years!

>you have to admit there are pretty good transport links to London.

Yep it's dead easy and quick to get to London from Manchester,

Newcastle, Scotland etc. - if you've got the money to afford to fly

that is!

>Some people come from overseas to the festival, so if they can make it...

So it doesn't matter what's fairest for people living across the UK

then when it comes to " national " events?

>Also the people who organise the event live there

Why not call it the " London Vegan Festival " then?!

Apologies if you think I'm being overly cynical and unfair, but

holding national events in London (accepting what you're saying that

the vegan festival isn't being actually being billed as a naional

event) with no reasonable justification for doing so whatsoever is a

major bugbear of mine. I for one feel increasingly narked at the

blatant bias shown towards London when it comes to projects that are

meant to be of national relevance (e.g. the Wembley rebuild fiasco).

Local newspaper articles and letters up here in the Midlands show that

I'm not alone in my views and I'm sure it's the same in other parts of

the country apart from the south-east.

Anyway, enough of this rant - I'm obviously in a bad mood this

morning!

Tell that to people in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

There are also very good transport links to Birmingham.

> Some people come from overseas

To be honest if it weren't for that quote I wouldn't have replied. It

smacks of complete arrogance to me.

To put it in context though, I recently flew from Brussels to Stansted for

£8 (after tax). There is absolutely no way anyone could get to London from

Hull, for example, for that amount. Still I would make a guess that those

who come from overseas are the ones who can afford it (especially if you

add the cost of accommodation in London) and so are much better offer than

the average vegan living in Newcastle or Plymouth.

That is a very fair point with which I doubt anyone could disagree. On its

own it would have been a very compelling argument.

and anyone knows that getting from South Wales to Northampton/Leicester is a bit of a trek ... compared to South Wales - London etc... so the central is always the logistical centre...

You don't have to fly from Manchester. Tho if I lived there I'd be flapping for all I was worth!

And, let's face it, all you folks in the sticks are just begging for a chance to come breathe our smoke...

[And if you ain't, you oughtta be.]

Wales, Scotland & NI? Do they count?

And BIRMINGHAM? You ever been there? If I hadn't lived in the arsehole of the universe once (Chard, Somerset) Brum would get my vote.

So you flew from Brussels to Stansted for £8; your point is..? And how much did it cost you to get home from Stansted?

Okay then, let's have the NATIONAL Vegan Festival in some goD forsaken hole in... let me think (ok, would be a first) Morpeth say. Happy now?

Viv, I don't want to worry you my dear, but you're starting to sound

just like Edith. Not that I have anything against Edith you

understand (*ducking and donning hard hard*) but I do feel that this

world only has room for one Vegan Queen.

Exactly!!! From a public transport point of view, London must be the easiest place to travel to! I certainly don't mind travelling up.

I live near Plymouth and I'm travelling up by train for the National Vegan Festival. Only takes 2 1/2 to 3 hours. I really want to go so the train fare is worth it. :-)

You live there and have to ask? Maybe it's changed since 82-86. Small small town, beer like pis in poor pubs, aggressive natives, crap public transport, no decent shops. I'll think of some more in a mo... Or did you mean why did I live there?

Used to live above a bookies at 56 Fore St [got a transfer from London] just down from the Dolphin. Give it a wave next time you go past! [bookies has moved now.]

But it was living there that finally opened my eyes to animal-eating so my time there wasn't wasted. And there was a very good bakers...

About £80. My point, which you nicely emphasized for me, is that it is

cheaper to get to London from abroad than it is from other parts of the UK.

Never crossed my mind for an instant!

How's the training? How does it go? Walk for a minute, jog for a

minute, collapse in pub for half an hour, walk for a minute...

You have my admiration - I wouldn't even attempt it!

Training hasn't started yet cos I'm still waiting for my back to get better. But the schedule sounded okay - except for the "jog" bit. How about I just jog my belly up & down for a minute?

My sis is going to give me her treadmill if I can make the room for it. Might have to chuck out the chairs still, good excuse not to have people over.
