Guest guest
Hi - me again, In some USA based forums refined sugar has been mentioned as being filtered through bone charcoal. Is this just in the USA or does this happen here too? If this is the case, I would like to know if you have found any alternatives? Thank you, Vicky

Have you got the Vegan Shopper book from the Vegan Society, it's about £5 and basically is just a list of products suitable for vegans. It does get out of date quickly as manufacturers are forever changing the ingredients so you do need to be vigilant still, but the Vegan Soc do produce update sheets which you can download from their website. And you can pay by cheque! I don't have my copy to hand at the moment, but it does explain the sugar situation. Michael
Guest guest
Thanks for your help Michael. I think getting the vegan shopper is a very good idea. I was planning on getting it a few weeks ago but got sidetracked. At the moment I'm avoiding anything even slightly suspicious!! , Mavreela <nec.lists@m...> wrote: > > >In some USA based forums refined sugar has been mentioned as being > >filtered through bone charcoal. Guest guest
The other handy / lazy / essential step for vegan shopping is to use the Co-op. They label their vegan goodies :-) Especially handy if you have relatives giving you the " what type of biscuits can you eat " type grilling... Guest guest
Hi Vicky Unrefined Fair-Trade Organic Demerera sugar is probably the best stuff to buy, for all of the ecological, vegan, health and fairness reasons you can imagine. Or, then again you might have just wanted sugar instead. Ash Ps: did anyone tell Vicky that questions to the list cost 50p each? she's amassing quite a bill. :-) HotJobs, a service - Search Thousands of New Jobs

Yes indeed, the Co-Op is the best supermarket to support for this and probably other reasons. In case anyone has been buying them and hasn't spotted it, unfortunately the Co-Op have recently changed one of the ingredients of their own brand cornflakes (I don't know which one) so that they aren't vegan anymore. Let's hope it isn't the start of something more significant as was the case with Linda McCartney foods (spit!). Chris W

I've got two in my *road* and I live in Bognor Regis! I'm not kidding - neither is large and the road is fairly long (about 300 houses) but even so! Maybe the Co-Op is a southern- based phenomenon, much like the Vegan Festival. ;-) Cathy

In Hull we mostly have Jackson's stores, a local company that also has stores throughout Yorkshire and the North Midlands. You do get co-op's in the north, just not here. As to my parents in Essex, there is a small weeny Co-op in the town, but its absolutely useless. There is no co-op supermarket near by them either.
