But to me "vegan" is simply a description of someone who, for whatever reason, does not use animal products. Period. Full stop.

I agree 100%. I hate it when people say they are vegan when they are not and I hate it when people say they are veggie and they eat fish and chicken.

What I mean to say is that one should not feel bad about not being vegan if they really cant be. Just be happy to be what they are, even if there is no name for it! I think being vegan or veggie has to come from within. Trying to force someone to be vegan wont make them vegan on the inside, only 'counterfeit' vegan, vegan just for someone else's sake, not for the sake of nh-animals; out of intimidation. None of which I am accusing you or anyone else of here! Don't confuse cultural labels with descriptions.

Mmmm, that is an interesting point. I dont think I meant labels as cultural constructions though. I mean the way some of us respond to things 'subjectively' and compassionate, while others are brought up to be unkind, indifferent and selfish.

I find it disturbing to think that kindness and compassion for non-human animals is not a universal, innate instinct of the homosapien, rather a culturally conditioned phase of time and space.

The maternal 'instinct' is another thing thought to be specific to time and geological space. Before the Victorian era, (I think it was!) it was almost unheard of for mothers to suckle their own children. Instead they sent them to 'wet-nurses'. The 'angelic child' and 'childhood innocense' also originate from the Vicky period (but maybe only for a certain class. others were sent up chimneys).

I know Genevieve is vegan on the inside = she cares about nh-animals, and sounds as if she is doing her best with the best of her ability.
